While a termite infestation can be detected early by investing in regular pest inspections by a registered pest controller, inspections don’t prevent termites entering homes so many people may one day have to deal with the consequences of an infestation.

How work Eflex Acredited Operators

Thankfully, a number of approaches are there that are applicable in dealing with an established termite colony on your property. The Eflex products from FMC are made to uniquely offer ample answers for termite eradication.

The level of research and the design of Eflex are done to give it a certification of use only by a licensed pest controller. The use of the termite control products from FMC entails a number of steps that I will now outline.

Checkup

The first step entails a thorough inspection of the property and its surrounds for evidence of a termite infestation.

Areas commonly affected by termites include untreated timber such as door frames and windowsills, and warm, moist areas of the garden, particularly those containing wooden sleepers or tree trunks and roots.

Baiting

Your pest controller will then set up a bait station in any areas considered to be affected by termites. Bait stations are stations containing a bait product that is designed to be appealing to termites.

The product, however, is laced with a toxin that will eventually kill the termite that has ingested it.

These toxins are slow working, allowing the termite to return to the colony and contaminate other termites before death occurs.

Consolidating

Colony death often occurs between two to six months after the baiting procedure.

The precise time-length between the application and death of the termite colony is governed by factors such as the take-up of the baiting product, and also the size of the colony.

A big termite colony establishment will need a longer time to deal with than a small colony.

The pest controller may then suggest putting in place a ‘termite barrier’, which is designed to prevent re-infestation.

Coopex Dust

An effective product for Coptotermes Spp (subterranean termites) in trees and stumps in urban areas of Canberra, ACT is Coopex Dust.

To treat termites in this situation, use up to 250 g per tree. Upon locating a termite nest in a tree or stump, drill 3-4 holes with a maximum diameter of 12 mm. More holes and dust may be needed for larger trees.

The use of Cockroach puffer will suffice, or a direct application of dust to the nest, using a CO2 gas cylinder and a trigger gun.

After having this treatment, holes in the tree should be coated carefully with fungicide;e.g. copper naphthenate. Pascall’s “Stop Rot” is recommended. Then seal with Shelley’s “Caulk in Colours” or another appropriate caulking compound.

• If you used a vacuum cleaner on a flea-infested carpet, make sure to properly dispose off of the vacuum cleaner bag as fleas and eggs will be present
• Flea ‘bombs’ are available for purchase from any supermarket; however, they may not be an appropriate flea control solution if the problem is severe or has recurred despite this treatment.
• You should also think about extending your treatment to outdoor shady areas where your pets often spend time as these areas may be harbouring fleas.

Fleas may have entered your home via any one of a number of means, even if your pets have never had fleas before, for example:

You may have brought bedding, carpet or other items into your home that contained flea eggs or cocooned adult fleas. Your pet may have sat or lay down in a place in your yard, at the local dog park, or elsewhere where fleas were present;

The chemical is brought back to the colony by the carrier termites, and in the best of circumstances the remainder of the colony is affected by the inhibitor The rest of the colony and the carrier will die, due to the growth inhibitor.
