Rodent Control in Your Work Place

Rodent Control in Your Work Place

Work Place

Do you currently need rodent control in either your suburban home or your commercial premises? If you are sharing your space with these disgusting disease carrying rodents that have caused the deaths of millions of people throughout the centuries, than you need to speak with us.

Rats and mice were the main cause of the spread of the Bubonic Plaque and the spread of Leptospirosis – the illness that killed Olympic rower Andy Holmes in 2010.

Just these two examples will give you an idea of the types of bacterium that can be spread by rats. Leptospirosis is contracted by ingesting water or open wounds or cuts coming into contact with water or that has been contaminated by rat urine.

This is not a disease that was just in the Middle Ages, there are 200 cases a year diagnosed in Australia according to the NSW Government Health Department fact sheet, and it is estimated that many more go undiagnosed.

If you own a garage, shed or a storeroom and have kept old clothing, paperwork or any other type of fabric, you know what type of damage rats can do to your property.

 Rodent Control Specialist

Rodent Control in Your Work Place

Rodent Control

The rats will shred the boxes clothing and paperwork in order to make insulation for their nests, speaking of which they don’t mind using some of that that you have in your walls.

One of the main things to remember however is that rats tend to move into a building that has a viable food source, but if you don’t have a food source do not that you are immune to an infestation. All it takes is to be near a food source so effective rat control is a must.

No matter what type of structure you own, whether it is commercial or residential, we have a few simple things that you can do to make them less friendly to the rat population:

1. If you are going to store food make sure it is tightly sealed as well as all bins
2. No rubbish should be kept in the premises
3. Use strong plastic containers to store items that the rats might use for nesting, as opposed to cardboard or plastic bags

We have 5 great reasons why you will want to deal with our firm:

1. You will receive well educated information regarding your rodent infestation or pest problem
2. You will not be sold something you do not need
3. All of our products have an eye towards the environment and your pets
4. Your Termite Control will only be carried out by our technicians that are accredited and insured. We use the latest technology, such as thermal imaging cameras and tracking tools, so that you will get the best inspection you could possibly receive
5. The service that we provide you with is guaranteed, with a money-back policy from our company if we do not give you the service we stated or any promises that we made. This is how we built up our business and why we have repeat happy customers.

Call Bob 0407 065 413 for a free chat on any pest problems that you may have and he will be able to offer you the best pest solution for your problem.

Considering a Termidor Treatment?

3 Reasons Why You Should Protect Your Home With This Termite Control Product

Did you ever seriously think about trying to protect your home with Termidor? Or were you tossing up whether to get a cheaper or safer termite solution? Perhaps with old style repellent termiticides or baits?

Termidor

Termidor Termite control

When you understand more about it, most of those hindrances to action tend to go away. Let’s have a look at the 3 main reasons that people decide to use Termidor.

Reason Number 1:

“It’s got a great track record”
Since it was released in Australia in 2002, Termidor has been scrutinised and examined under all Australian environments.

Twenty-two termite affected homes in 5 states used an experimental use permit where the results were simply outstanding. In nine weeks every states homes had achieved a 100% success rate. Termite activity was eliminated within a 4.3 week’s average*

Termidor canberra

Termidor termite inspection

It’s protected over 2.6 million homes in the US alone. O.K., I understand you when you object that it’s expensive and I agree with you.

That is a good point, however you should consider how much your home is worth, and how much damage can termite do to your property over a short period of time.

Reason Number 2:

“Termidor has minimal impact on the environment”
When applied according to the label directions, Termidor has very little impact on the environment.

It is applied at some of the lowest doses of any of the termiticides available today, and the active ingredient has been registered in household pet products in Australia since 1996.

Plus, Termidor has been assessed by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, and is fully approved for use in domestic and commercial situations.

Also as Termidor is water soluble & has no detectable smell, and is cannot hurt and has no effect on soil micro-organisms, worms or plants.

Third and last reason:

“It has a proven record of fast elimination and highly effective, long-term residual termite control”. This will mean that damage to your home will stop sooner, and be protected over a longer period of time.
Again, you win!

Think about these reasons and how they apply to your situation. They are strong enough reasons to convince many to get a Termidor treatment. Do they convince you?

Seriously now, just think about it for a moment. Don’t those reasons apply to you? Perhaps you really should think of all Termidor’s advantages.

Termidor has Better Features and Benefits

• Superior Transfer Effect for unbeatable termite control & protection
• Much, much, faster than baiting and quick cessation of termite damage
• Low dose of Fipronil, which is the active ingredient for puppy and kitten flea shampoo
• Non-repellent, which means no sleepless nights worrying about whether it will stop the termites
damaging your home
• No effect on earth worms, mammals, micro-organisms, or plants
• No emulsifier as it is water soluable
• Much longer residual control, from 5 to 10 years, even in the tropics

Call us on 0407 065 413 or send an email to Bob@A1pestcontrolcanberra.com.au if you have a problem with termites.

SentriconSentricon

Looking for information about Sentricon termite bait used to control termites and other insect pests?

Ridding a property of termites, ants, and other common pests is easier said than done, with many over-the-counter products treating only the visible parts of the infestation.

Unfortunately, superficial treatments mean that the termite or ant colony continues to grow and expand, with the infestation able to continue unabated.

Professional pest control agencies are licensed to use a variety of high-grade pest control products in their efforts to deal with ant and termite infestations.

These products are designed to be wide reaching and hard-hitting, and can be effective in dealing with the most challenging of infestations.

One common product in the pest controller’s arsenal is Sentricon. The product has two key contents: the Above-Ground andthe In-Ground Termite Bait.

A combine use of the two products will effectively deal with termite inhabitants that have made their home within a structure, or within areas such as soil or trees.

 Sentricon Tips

The product is designed to be simultaneously palatable and toxic to ants and termites. This means that pests are attracted to the product, and are inclined to ingest it.

However, ants or termites that ingest the product become affected by its toxic component. When they return to the colony, they contaminate other ants or termites, spreading the product throughout the colony. Over time the entire colony may be destroyed.

How much bait is required is dependent on the size of the colony. A very large colony will typically take longer to destroy, and will require more bait. New colonies become susceptible to the product much more quickly.

Usually the process takes around six months in total, but because the product is so effective in destroying the entire ant or termite colony, the application is usually a one-off.

A professional pest controller will monitor the colony throughout the process to ensure that the Sentricon application process has been effective.

In addition to its effectiveness, there are a number of other reasons why this product is so popular. First, it’s easy to apply, with the application process typically quick and easy, and mess-free.

It’s also eco-friendly, and is low-risk to both humans and animals, making it a good choice for households with children or pets. It’s also low-risk to the pest controller, who is able to avoid contact with the hazardous chemicals found in some other pest control products.

Sentricon is a cost-effective and useful solution to widespread ant and termite infestations. For more information about managing your termite or ant infestation, don’t hesitate to contact us
Bob on 0407-065-413.

Premise

Looking for information about Premise, a popular and effective professional solution to pest infestations? Termites, ants, and other small pests can be a headache to the home or property owner.

Despite their small size, they’re known for causing all manner of problems to a building and its contents. Termites pose a significant threat to the structure of a property, while ants can contaminate food stores.

However, a homeowner’s efforts to deal with an ant or termite infestation are often only partially successful. This is in part because these efforts fail to get to the source of the infestation, and also because home owners are worried about the impact of pest control products on the environment, and on the household’s residents and pets.

 Premise Tips

Premise is a popular solution to dealing with small pests in part because it is known for its very low toxicity. The product is a ‘low hazard’ product, and represents very low risk to humans and their pets, including dogs, cats, and small mammals.

It’s also water-based, making it environmentally friendly, and is low-odour. This means that the product, when applied, does not cause fumes or other residues to be emitted into the air.

This feature differentiates it from a number of other pest control products, and makes it a popular choice for home-based pest-control.

Premise

Premise as a Popular Solution

Premise has been used for more than five years in Australia, and has been found highly effective in termite control, with long-term efficacy that keeps termites at bay.

It’s often used as a barrier product to reduce or eradicate nearby termite populations that are attempting to enter homes. Because the product cannot be detected by termites, they aren’t repelled by it.

This means that the termites are encouraged to enter the areas treated by the chemical, rather than avoiding these areas, which is a common issue with many other termite control products.

Because such products repel termites, the termites simply skirt around the termite barrier until they find an unaffected area. This doesn’t happen with Premise.

The product is highly effective in killing termites, even in low doses. Those that aren’t killed become ill as a result of the product. These affected termites typically return to the nest, contaminating the other termites and destroying the termite colony.

Research into the product has found that termite colonies typically do not return to the treated properties, with these properties remaining free from termites for up to seven years.

A1 Pest Control Canberra is knowledgeable about Premise and can discuss its application and efficacy with you. For more information about this and other pest control products, feel free to contact Bob on 0407 065 413

Eflex Acredited Operators

Eflex Operators

Eflex Acredited Operators

Searching for information about Eflex, the termite control range developed by FMC?

A termite infestation can be bad news to a home or property owner, who may find themselves facing a significant repair bill as a result of widespread termite damage that has gone unnoticed. Worse, these repairs aren’t covered by insurance.

While a termite infestation can be detected early by investing in regular pest inspections by a registered pest controller, inspections don’t prevent termites entering homes so many people may one day have to deal with the consequences of an infestation.

How work Eflex Acredited Operators

Thankfully, a number of approaches are there that are applicable in dealing with an established termite colony on your property. The Eflex products from FMC are made to uniquely offer ample answers for termite eradication.

The level of research and the design of Eflex are done to give it a certification of use only by a licensed pest controller. The use of the termite control products from FMC entails a number of steps that I will now outline.

Checkup

The first step entails a thorough inspection of the property and its surrounds for evidence of a termite infestation.

Areas commonly affected by termites include untreated timber such as door frames and windowsills, and warm, moist areas of the garden, particularly those containing wooden sleepers or tree trunks and roots.

Baiting

Your pest controller will then set up a bait station in any areas considered to be affected by termites. Bait stations are stations containing a bait product that is designed to be appealing to termites.

The product, however, is laced with a toxin that will eventually kill the termite that has ingested it.

These toxins are slow working, allowing the termite to return to the colony and contaminate other termites before death occurs.

This heightens the chances of eradication or reducing the colony.

Following up

Your pest controller should conduct regular checks of the property to ensure that all termite-affected areas have been identified, and to monitor levels of termite activity. This helps to control the existing termite population, as well as to reduce the likelihood of further damage caused by new termite infestations.

Consolidating

Colony death often occurs between two to six months after the baiting procedure.

The precise time-length between the application and death of the termite colony is governed by factors such as the take-up of the baiting product, and also the size of the colony.

A big termite colony establishment will need a longer time to deal with than a small colony.

The pest controller may then suggest putting in place a ‘termite barrier’, which is designed to prevent re-infestation.

Termite Control North Canberra

Coopex Dust

An effective product for Coptotermes Spp (subterranean termites) in trees and stumps in urban areas of Canberra, ACT is Coopex Dust.

To treat termites in this situation, use up to 250 g per tree. Upon locating a termite nest in a tree or stump, drill 3-4 holes with a maximum diameter of 12 mm. More holes and dust may be needed for larger trees.

The use of Cockroach puffer will suffice, or a direct application of dust to the nest, using a CO2 gas cylinder and a trigger gun.

After having this treatment, holes in the tree should be coated carefully with fungicide;e.g. copper naphthenate. Pascall’s “Stop Rot” is recommended. Then seal with Shelley’s “Caulk in Colours” or another appropriate caulking compound.

The effective elimination of commercial and domestic insect and pests is achievable by using Coopex Dust, which reaches hard to get at areas, and giving up to 6 months long-term protection.

It is minimally hazardous to humans but is a highly potent insecticide that attacks the nervous system of insects.

The Dust has no lasting deposits and biologically decomposes in the environment. Coopex Dust is the leading product of its type in the pest control market place.

A consistence in both application and results is achieved through the dust’s high quality formulation. It is the best product to use on electrical objects and areas that can be sprayed.

Bi-Flex

Looking for information about Bi-Flex, a powerful termiticide? If you’re concerned about the damage that can be wrought on your home or property by large termite populations, then you might be interested in the benefits of this product in terms of destroying and discouraging termite colonies.

Because termites are capable of causing large amounts of damage to a property and its contents by destroying structures such as wooden supports or valuables such as books and storage boxes, it’s essential that home and property owners take action to ensure that a termite infestation does not go unchecked.

As most home owners do not have a thorough understanding of the behaviour of termite colonies, arranging for a professional pest controller to manage a termite infestation is recommended.

One product often used by professional pest controllers in helping to control termite populations, as well as other home-dwelling pests, is Bi-Flex.

This product is designed to create effective termite barriers around the home and other nearby structures. It is often applied to termite-prone areas such as building foundations, chimney areas, the slab perimeter, crawl spaces and other openings such as ducts and pipes, and also nearby trees and stumps. This helps stop the existing infestation, and to discourage the termites from returning.

Bi-Flex is widely used by professional pest controllers, and has a number of benefits in terms of keeping termite infestations under control.

Effectiveness

One advantage of using this product is that it is highly effective even when applied at relatively low concentrations.

Research has indicated that even a small amount of the product may help to destroy termite infestations. This makes it both cost-effective and more environmentally friendly because less of the product needs to be used.

Duration

In addition to helping stop termite infestations in their tracks, Bi-Flex continues to do so for extended periods of time, meaning that not only are termite colonies wiped out, but they’re discouraged from returning.

Safety

Perhaps one of the biggest selling points of this product is that its active ingredient is known for being stable.

This means that residents in the home or property won’t be exposed to harmful chemicals or residues, and won’t be subject to strong chemical smells.

In fact, the product is safe enough that it can be used in the garden – including around vegetables or fruit trees.

If you’re concerned about the damage being done to your Canberra home by a termite colony, then it’s worth speaking to a professional pest controller about the methods available to help deal with pest infestations.

Our company is experienced in using products such as Bi-Flex, so feel free to contact us for more information about the application process.

Benefits

  • Low odour formulation
  • Water based formulation
  • Virtually non-senstising
  • Low application rate

spider controlLooking for professional spider control? Australia is home to numerous species of spiders, and there’s no shortage of them in most Aussie back yards.

Many are relatively harmless, some will give you a nasty bite, and others like the Red Back, the Funnel Web and the White Tailed Spider are capable of making the recipient of the bite quite ill.

There aren’t too many of us that like spiders, so whether they’re harmless or not, it’s safe to say that most of us would prefer that all varieties of spiders stayed well away from our home!

Your local pest control expert can assist you with this by treating your home once a year to deter spiders. If you have young children or you’re frightened of spiders, annual spider control may already be your habit however there may be some more things you can do to make your home less inviting to spiders:

• Avoid storing or stacking things up against the outside walls of your home. You may have noticed that Red Backs in particular like to hide behind things. When you have a tidy up to clear these items, wear gloves and move items with caution.

• If you have a garage or shed, keep it tidy and clean – spiders like to build webs in between or behind items so stacks of boxes and unused items can be an ideal environment. Spiders seem to prefer peace and quiet so a nice dark, infrequently used garden shed makes the perfect home. Consider having a spring clean!

• Spiders eat other insects so taking steps to control other insect populations around the home may also help. If you have a problem with other insects, speak to your pest controller for advice.

• In between spider control treatments, consider using a surface spray in the areas you know spiders like to frequent.

• Ensure fly screens are properly fitted to your windows, and if you don’t have fly screens, consider investing in them – open windows and loose or torn fly screens are an easy entry point for spiders.

Spiders aren’t always easy to get rid of – they have millions of years of evolution on their side and appear to be quite intelligent! But persistence and diligence can pay off keeping the area outside your home free from clutter, regularly cleaning behind outdoor furniture, and calling out the pest controller once a year will help to minimise the number of spiders you see around your home.

If you don’t want to be invaded by this summer, speak to us about spider control now.

Call Bob on 0407 065 413 or send us a message if you have a problem with spiders or need spider treatment.

Flea Control

Flea Management

 Flea Control

Have you got fleas at your place? If you’ve already attempted to rid your home of fleas and haven’t been successful you may need to arrange a professional flea control treatment.

Don’t be too surprised fleas are one of the hardest insects for the householder to eradicate themselves due to their complex breeding cycle.

You may also be surprised to know that you don’t have to have pets in the house for a flea infestation to occur – adult fleas still at the cocoon stage can remain dormant in the cocoon for several months, particularly in carpet in an unoccupied home.

Any activity, including the arrival of new occupants, can drive the fleas to exit the cocoon in search of food.

If you do have pets, fleas may be a frequent problem but there are things you can do to help minimise the problem easily:

• Consult with your veterinary regarding the most effective methods of flea control for your pets;

• Take the necessary steps to drive away all the fleas that have chosen to reside in the bedding material being used by your pet.
• If the problem persists, you might as well dispose off of the old bedding and replace it but don’t do this until after you have taken steps to remove the fleas from your pets and from other areas in the home, or the new bedding may quickly become infested.
• If you used a vacuum cleaner on a flea-infested carpet, make sure to properly dispose off of the vacuum cleaner bag as fleas and eggs will be present
• Flea ‘bombs’ are available for purchase from any supermarket; however, they may not be an appropriate flea control solution if the problem is severe or has recurred despite this treatment.
• You should also think about extending your treatment to outdoor shady areas where your pets often spend time as these areas may be harbouring fleas.
• If you are having a problem with fleas it’s important to tackle the problem quickly. Fleas are more than a nuisance they are blood sucking parasites that are capable of transmitting tapeworm.

Fleas – where did they come from?

Fleas may have entered your home via any one of a number of means, even if your pets have never had fleas before, for example:

You may have brought bedding, carpet or other items into your home that contained flea eggs or cocooned adult fleas. Your pet may have sat or lay down in a place in your yard, at the local dog park, or elsewhere where fleas were present;

If you don’t have a pet, the previous occupant of your new home may have had one. Of course, how they got there may not be your biggest concern at this point! If you’re being eaten alive, speak to your local pest controller about professional flea control.

Cockroach Management

Cockroach

  Cockroach Management

Are you searching for cockroach management? In the country, these insects perform a useful role in the eco-system but in the populated suburbs, some species are just pests.

Nobody likes to see cockroaches and you may have noticed that a percentage of people become extremely alarmed when they see them on opening cupboard doors etc. Cockroaches can carry a range of dangerous bacteria including Salmonella, Staphylococcus and Streptococcus. They may also be capable of carrying viruses such as the poliovirus.

It’s because of the capacity of cockroaches to carry and spread disease that Cockroach management is just as important in the home as it is in a food or restaurant outlet.

What Diseases do Cockroaches Spread?

Cockroaches are scavengers. Not only do they feed on discarded rubbish and dead animals, they also enter sewers to scavenge. They ingest bacteria while eating, and collect it on their body while moving.

As they eat and move about they regurgitate and expel faeces, leaving bacteria behind. When they travel around your kitchen and investigate the food packets in your cupboard, they may be leaving harmful bacteria behind and when you touch the surface of pick up something they have walked on, you may come into contact with those bacteria.

Tips to Discouraging Cockroaches:

• Ensure that food is sealed and crumbs or residue not left on benches, the floor or in the pantry.
• Empty rubbish immediately from the home and keeping outside bins with a tightly fitted lid.
• Wash all pet bowls and do not leave food in the bowl over night.
• Storing old books, magazines or other items that aren’t in use in well sealed plastic containers rather than cardboard boxes, or just stacking them in a storage cupboard.
• Regularly clean behind and beneath kitchen appliances like the microwave and fridge, and remove the crumbs daily from your toaster.
• Using a surface spray.

Whether you’re a restaurant operator or a home owner, the sight of a cockroach scurrying across the floor – or even belly up dead in the cupboard – is something you’d prefer not to see; and it’s certainly something that your visitors or customers don’t want to see.

But sometimes, despite your best efforts in regard to hygiene, cockroaches still appear. This may sometimes be the result of unhygienic conditions at nearby premises, or conversely, the result of a recent pest control or cockroach management treatment nearby that has sent the local cockroaches off in search of new food sources.

If you’d like to speak to a professional about cockroach management you can call us today for more information or to arrange a pest inspection.

termite baiting

Termite Baiting Canberra

Termite Baiting

Termite Baiting do you know what this is?  Let me tell you what it is and how it is used.  As termites are a significant issue for Canberra home and properties, and are in fact one of the most common causes behind property damage in the country. As termite colonies can often go undetected until they have caused visible problems with a property, they can be a serious problem for property owners and what most people are unaware of is that home insurance doesn’t cover termite damage.

 Termite Baiting Tips

There is 1 popular way of dealing with termite infestations is termite baiting. This process involves attracting termites to a particular area, and then treating them with a specially designed insecticide. The process works as the affected termites do not die immediately, but return to their colonies. In doing so, they infect the other members of their colony with the toxin they have ingested.

Over time, this results in the death of the termite colony. Baiting is one of several solutions to dealing with termites, and is often used when other treatments are not viable. For example, baiting can be a good option where using standard termiticides may pose a threat to the environment, such as in areas near water, when pesticides cannot be used, or when barrier treatments, treatments designed to stop termite infestations occurring, have been unsuccessful.

Termite baiting should only be performed by a licensed pest controller, as termite dusting often involves the application of chemicals and toxins that may not be used by other individuals. In fact, many over-the-counter processes for baiting termites are designed only to determine whether termite colonies are present on the property, rather than to destroy these colonies. Professional pest controllers are able to oversee the entire process of identifying, assessing, and dealing with a termite infestation, so it’s in your interest to invest in a pest control inspection the sooner the better.

There are currently several different types of termite baits available on the market. These vary in their application process, their toxins and active ingredients, their effectiveness, and how environmentally friendly they are.

Not all termite baits are appropriate to a given property, and a professional pest controller will be able to advise about which product are best suited and to be most effective for your household’s needs. For example, factors such as whether you own pets, or whether the infestation is within the home or outside the home may affect the type of termite bait chosen.

Termite baiting can be an effective solution to dealing with a termite infestation, but is best discussed with a professional pest controller who can advise you about whether it is the most appropriate method of dealing with your termite problem.

A1 Pest Control Canberra is experienced in baiting, so for more information feel free to contact

White Ant Control

White Ant Control canberra

 White Ant Control

If you are concerned about white ant control or perhaps you have a problem with white ants in your area or on your property the time to act is now.  White ants more correctly called termites are a common pest in suburban Australia. The risk of infestation is quite high in many areas so it’s important to have a white ant control strategy plan in place.

For those who don’t undertake some type of white ant control can end up paying a high price for ignoring the problem.  As although white ants may be tiny but they have voracious appetites and can leave a large repair bill for the homeowner. White ant control and prevention is essential if you want to protect your home and property.

Where to Start with Your – White Ant Control

White ant control really start from the time that you purchase a new home. If you’ve built a new home, some sort of white ant control will most likely be in place but it’s up to you to take responsibility for future white ants control.

Say if you’re purchasing an existing home, consider making it conditional on a satisfactory termite inspection report  if you don’t and termites are present, white ant control and treatment along with repairs to your new home may cost much more than your overall budget!

Once you’re in your new home, your white ant control strategy should involve a professional inspection once or twice per year. At just $200 to $350 for the average suburban home, it’s great value for money. You can also participate in your own strategy by learning about white ants and the tell-tale signs of their presence around your home and in the garden.

White Ant Control

White Ant Canberra

Not only can white ants be highly destructive, but the type of white ant most likely to attack your Australian home the subterranean termite who works undercover and are hard to spot, making your white ant control strategy very important.

If you’re in an area where termites are prevalent, you may prefer to take your white ant control a step further than regular inspections and have a termite barrier placed around your home. Chemical barriers are frequently used as a means of white ant control.

Chemical Barriers

Pest control methods have come a long way in recent years. Increased understanding of termite behaviour has brought about the development of new white ant control methods that utilize the termites’ grooming and feeding habits against them.

One of these modern methods is a chemical barrier that cannot be detected by termites, allowing the poison to be transported into the termite colony and passed on to others. Many pest controllers believe this is a very effective form of white ant control.

More Advice that will Assist in White Ant Control

Only use timbers and wood chips that have been treated to deter termites ensure you don’t stack wood against your home or in areas that are close by, removing old tree stumps, and not having shrubbery up against the home can aid white ant control by making the area less attractive to termites.

Termite Inspection Canberra Homes at Risk

Termite Inspection Canberra

Termite Inspection Canberra Homes at risk

A termite inspection in Canberra is something most homeowners endeavour to do on a very regular basis. Some will arrange annual inspections, those at high risk may have twice yearly inspections, and a few homeowners will forget, or opt not to arrange a one at all. If you’re considering arranging a timber pest inspection, why not learn a little more about the process before you book in and I will explain the process.

Termite inspection Canberra certificate is required from ACTPLA when building a new home.  This has now been mandatory for some time now and building inspectors will not sign off a completion certificate unless this step is complete.

Why you need to have a termite inspection

Termites particularly subterranean termites are prevalent in most areas of suburban Canberra. The amount of damage they can do to a home in a matter of months is quite astounding considering their size.

Regular inspections are vital for homeowners who don’t want to risk being faced with a big timber damage repair bill. An expert evaluation of Canberra homes can help by detecting the presence of termites as early as possible.

When you’re buying a home, a pre-purchase inspection is a very wise idea – it could save you purchasing a home that has thousands of dollars worth of damage that wasn’t visible at an open home!

So what’s involved in Termite Inspection Canberra?

Locating termites in a home isn’t easy, so a termite expert should always carry out inspections. Termites are discreet in their eating and travelling habits they travel out of view in mud tunnels and eat out of view inside the wood, leaving the exterior intact. A qualified timber pest inspector needs to thoroughly examine a home including the roof void, sub floor, the exterior of the dwelling, and the grounds.

Termite Inspection Canberra

A report should contain information about active termites and any visible termite damage at the time, identify the species of termite, and provide information on termite protection and prevention. If some areas were inaccessible, the report should specify the areas that were not inspected or obstructed.

Termite Inspection Canberra costs so little to protect your assett:

The cost of a visual termite inspection is usually around $200-$350.

Another very important reason to arrange something a regular basis is that termite damage is not covered by your home insurance policy.

If you need to arrange a termite inspection, Canberra expert opinion, or a pest report, call a qualified timber pest expert.

Pest Inspection by Professionals

Pest Inspections by Professionals

Pest Inspector

A fully insured and licensed timber pest inspector will complete a visual inspection of all available and accessible areas looking for active and/or termite damage of your property during a timber pest inspection.

Conducive conditions for a termite attack and the recommendations and risks of management programs are included in the results of the report of your timber termite inspection.

What is a Pest Inspection?

The visual inspection of the easily accessible areas of your home for the evidence of wood-destroying organisms and insects is a true termite inspection.

The visual inspection of the exterior and the interior of your home (which includes the entering and accessing of any crawlspaces and basements) will be performed by the termite inspector.

The roof space will be inspected and accessed in houses that have no sub-areas and subterranean termites are prevalent. On an appropriate/applicable form the findings will be reported after your inspection has been completed.

How long does an inspection take?

It will depend on the conditions and the size (storage of personal items and clutter, etc.) of the property and the home, but on average a thorough pest or termite inspection will approximately take up to 60 minutes.

What do termites look like?

Pest Inspections by Professionals

Pest Inspection

There are three different castes (workers, soldiers and reproductive) of subterranean termite colonies.

They look very much in shape, size and color of a grain of rice, translucent and generally creamy white in color would describe how all subterranean termites look.

Often mistaken for flying ants, the “swarmers” or reproductives have a pair of even-sized wings. Except for their large and crushing mandibles and oversized heads the soldiers are similar in appearance.

What is the difference between ants and termites?

Ants and termites have a number of differences. An ant’s body shape is like an hourglass in that it narrows between the thorax in the front and in the rear the abdomen.

More cigar-shaped a termite’s body does not have the narrowing between the back and front half of the body.

Termite “swarmers” have equal-sized wings and ants, when wings are present, have smaller wings in the back and in the front the wings are larger.

Termite’s wings are more “veiny” than ant ant’s wings. A termite’s wings do not have a stigma (dark spot) that an ant has on the leading edge of the front wing.

The termite antennae are relatively straight, while the ant’s antennae is curved or bent. Ants do not eat the wood they tunnel through, termites do. The entry point of the termite is visible to the exposed slab edge.

How do you treat termites?

Pest Inspection canberra

Termite Inspection

In order to treat subterranean termites there are several methods. The most common treatment for subterranean termites is the chemical treatment.

A continuous termiticide barrier between the timber in a building and the termite colony (usually in the soil) is the goal of a subterranean termite chemical treatment.

Around the foundation elements a termiticide is placed in the soil to prevent termites from entering your property. A termiticide is injected beneath a trench dug by the technicians creating a protecting barrier around your property.

What is becoming a popular method for the treatment of subterranean termites is the in-ground baiting system. Cellulose (wood material) bait stations are placed in strategic places around the perimeter of your property as a subterranean baiting system.

In order to constantly feed their colony, worker termites forage for food, and upon locating the cellulose baiting stations their mates are summoned to the food source by the special scent trails.

To stop the moulting process in termites, the cellulose material in the bait station is replaced with a chemical inhibitor to prevent the termites from growing.

The chemical is brought back to the colony by the carrier termites, and in the best of circumstances the remainder of the colony is affected by the inhibitor The rest of the colony and the carrier will die, due to the growth inhibitor.

Termite workings under carpet edge. Could there be hidden termite damage?

Without a doubt! Termites and their colonies main characteristics are to stay underground or within wood products, in order to avoid bright lights and open air.

An active termite infestation for an inspector to visually locate and identify by looking at the trim or a finished wall surface is virtually impossible.

What can I do to Prevent Termite Infestation?

Having a pest control contractor come to your home and inject liquid termiticide to the foundation areas is the standard method of preventing termite infestation to your property.

Termite Inspection

Pest Inspection By expert

New methods of infestation prevention are being developed by the building sciences. Post-construction adjustments to the home to make them less conducive to an infestation by these wood-destroying insects can be made by the homeowner.

Earth to wood contact at support posts, improper drainage away from the property, inadequate ventilation in the crawlspace, and cellulose debris and form boards left in the crawlspace are the common conditions that will make your property conducive to an infestation.

The likelihood of an infestation is greatly reduced when these conditions are rectified.

Why do I have to treat if there are no live Termites?

Even though no live insects were found present, the mere evidence of a termite infestation and no prior evidence of termite treatment ever being performed, the inspector must report that there is an active infestation.

White AntsAre There White Ants Eating Your Home?

Today white ants or more correctly called termites, are a serious pest in Australia. They have the capacity to create thousands of dollars’ worth of damage in a matter of weeks or destroy an entire roof structure in as little as three months.

There is really no end to the destruction that they can cause and for the untrained eye these pests may go undetected for months before the damage that they have done has been discovered.

Ring Bob today 0407 065 413 for a friendly chat on concerns you may have about white ants.

Removing the roof and re-building the roof structure of a home is a very costly affair, and if damage has also occurred to the walls or floor of the home, the repair cost would be astronomical. And what a lot of people are unaware of is that their insurance policy doesn’t cover termite damage as this is deemed preventable!

Funnily enough white ants aren’t actually ants at all. They’re more closely related to cockroaches however, because they look like little pale coloured ants, many people refer to them as white ants. Whether you call them white ants or termites the amount of damage they can do remains the same.

How do you deter White Ants or Termites?

White ants present little evidence of their presence to the untrained eye. They eat through wood from the inside out so a colony of white ants can be busy at work without being seen.

There are many things you can do to help prevent these home eating pests from attacking your most valuable possession. Firstly, you can make your home less inviting as they are quite fussy when it comes to food and their environment. Action plan of what you can do:

  • Ensure you don’t have vegetation growing up against your house
  • Keep the area under your home and your roof space well ventilated as termites and other pests like dampness and humidity
  • Repair leaks quickly white ants like to have a source of water too
  • If you use timber for structures or retaining walls in your garden, ensure you choose termite resistant timers, or timber that has been treated to deter termites.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do is ensure that you have regular inspections to detect the presence of timber destroying pests in your home, or their activity level around your home. The CSIRO website suggests having an annual inspection and increasing that to twice a year if you live in a warm dry climate area in Australia that are more prone to termite activity.

Having a pest control expert visit your home annually is a small investment in your property against the type of damage a white ant or termite can do if left untreated.  The financial cost involved can be astronomical to restore and replace timbers and treat a property to get it back to a liveable state.  We suggest white ant prevention strategies, and treat any infestations early are less expensive ways to protect your home.

WaspsWasps Treatment – Canberra a problem?

We charge economic rates to get rid of wasps. For fast action call 0407 065 413 or email bob@a1pestcontrolcanberra.com.au

Wasp Stings

Wasps sting to defend themselves or their colony. Stinging involves the injection of protein venom that causes pain and other reactions.

Wasps can sting more than once because they are able to pull out their stinger without injury to themselves. If you are stung by a wasp, the stinger is not left in your skin.

Very rarely, a person may suffer a life-threatening, systemic allergic reaction to a wasp sting, which can cause anaphylactic shock fainting, difficulty breathing, swelling, and blockage in the throat within minutes of being stung.

These systemic symptoms are cause for immediate medical attention. People with known systemic allergic reactions to bee or wasp stings should consult with their physician.

The venoms of bees and wasps are different, so having a severe reaction to a wasp sting does not mean a person will have the same reaction to a bee sting.

Control of Nests

The first step in wasp control is to correctly identify the insect and locate its nesting site. An experienced pest control service may provide wasp treatment, or you can use the following information to attempt to control them yourself.

Wasps

One of the best times of the day to control wasp nests is at night, when they are less active. At temperatures below 5° C, wasps have difficulty flying.

Never seal a wasp nest until you are sure there are no surviving wasps inside. If a nest is not discovered until autumn, control may be unnecessary as imminent freezing temperatures will kill the colony.

Exposed wasp nests:

Wasp nests that are visible but are not near your home or areas of human activity do not need to be treated. If they are not disturbed, the wasps won’t bother you.

Nests that are near human activity can pose a potential problem. If there is a concern about stings, you should eradicate the nest.

Mechanical control without insecticides is possible for small, exposed nests. At night, cover the nest with a large, heavy, plastic bag and seal it shut.

Cut the nest from the tree and freeze it or let the bag sit in the sun, which will kill the wasps inside in a day or two. Use caution: there is more risk involved in this procedure than in spraying the nest.

Ground wasp nests:

European wasp control is needed the wasps become a problem and are found either nesting in the ground in roof voids, entry to the home etc you could first try pouring a soap and water solution into the entrance.

Many types of soap will work, including detergent and laundry soap.  A word of warning the European wasp is known for it’s sting and they sting more than once and don’t die afterwards.

If you have an allergy to stings this encounter with wasp could prove life threatening, and this job should be left to the professionals who have all the right equipment not to be stung!
If that doesn’t work, apply an insecticide into the nest opening. Be sure you use a product that is cleared for use in lawns or soil. Dusts are more effective than liquid insecticides because liquids do not always reach the nest. After you are sure all the wasps have been exterminated, cover the nest entrance with soil.

When treating ground-dwelling wasp nests, use the following insecticides: Permethrin e.g. Coopex as a dust.

Concealed wasp nests:

The most challenging nests to control are those that are concealed in voids behind walls or in roof voids. Often, the only evidence of the nest is wasps flying back and forth through a crack or hole in the home.

In this circumstance to be on the safe side you will need to call in a professional firm.

WaspsHow to Manage Wasp Control Safely

The European wasp produces stings that are very painful. If you notice their hives, stay at a safe distance and out of their flight path if possible. Their stinger is different from a bees, in that is does not have a barb which stays in the skin. Wasp nests are leathery and are usually found in gardens.

Wasp Sting Treatment

If you are stung by a wasp, the treatment is as set out below:

Try applying an ice pack every hour. This will reduce the swelling. Also wash the area with an antiseptic such as Dettol as per the label in a 1:20 dilution with water. Take a pain killer to stop the pain that will usually accompany the sting. Take an antihistamine if there is persistent itching, but don’t scratch.

The swelling should subside within a few hours, though the pain & redness may take awhile.

If you develop an allergic reaction to stings, the above first aid may not help you much.

In such a scenario, always consult a doctor. Medication will always depend upon how severe is the allergic reaction.

Severe allergic reactions can sometimes cause anaphylaxis AKA anaphylactic shock which can result in a low blood pressure, compromised respiratory functions due to a bronchospasm, or even a circulatory collapse which may lead to breathing problems.

Severe allergic reactions occur when the sting poison enters into the blood stream. Treatments often include the injection of an antihistamine.

Placement of a tube into your trachea to help breathing, intravenous fluids, and of course hospitalization and close monitoring.

TicksWorried About Ticks in Canberra? You Have a Right to Be!

If you live along the east coast of Australia, the chances are you’ve seen a few ticks in your time. The Paralysis Tick is the most common and problematic tick in this area and considering their miniscule size, these ticks can certainly pack a punch as doctors and veterinary surgeons can testify.

Paralysis ticks live in vegetation and dine on blood and they’re not too fussy who will host their next meal. And while most people are aware that horses, dogs and cats can be affected by ticks, many don’t realise that children and sometimes even adults may also become seriously ill when a tick latches onto them and goes undetected.

Here are 3 ways that ticks may cause illness in humans:

•Tick paralysis:

When ticks remain on their host unnoticed a variety of symptoms may develop including weakness in the limbs, headaches, partial paralysis usually of the face, fever and or rash, and even flu like symptoms. Children are more susceptible in this regard than adults.

•Allergic reaction:

A few individuals display an allergic reaction to ticks. In many cases the reaction will be mild however, in some individuals a severe and life threatening allergic reaction – anaphylaxis – may occur quite quickly after exposure and if this occurs, medical attention should be sought as a matter of urgency.

•Tick Typhus:

Relatively rare, tick typhus is a tick borne disease that may be transmitted from native animals to humans. Treatable with antibiotics, symptoms include headache, rash, fever, flu like symptoms and swollen glands.

Ticks

How to get rid of Ticks?

They may be small but ticks represent a significant danger to young children and pets, particularly as they’re so tiny and may go unnoticed until symptoms begin to occur. Even then, it may be difficult to locate the tick. Prevention is better than cure so here are two things you can do to minimize the risk of your children or pets being affected by ticks:

Helpful tips for Ticks:

•Trim bushy shrubs and minimize foliage around your yard – ticks tend to move onto a host when the host brushes against or walks beneath the foliage the ticks are on.

•Don’t keep shrubby areas too moist – ticks don’t like dry or very hot conditions.

In ACT and NSW there’s only one approved product for the eradication of ticks and only licensed pest controllers are allowed to apply it. If ticks are a problem in your area regardless of these measures, it’s time to call in a professional pest control operator to assist with insecticidal control of ticks and help you to keep your kids and your pets a little safer.

Rodent (Mainly rats and mice)Rodents(Mainly Rats and Mice)

Rats as well as mice are alongside mankind, essentially the most effective creatures on the planet when it comes to selection as well as range.

Mankind has unknowingly assisted their distribution through the entire word through exploration. Nevertheless, they’ve in certain conditions turn out to be his worst type of adversary.

Large amounts of money annually is sacrificed through contamination of foodstuff through rodent excrement, urine as well as fur. Rats ruin a lot more foodstuff compared to they might possibly consume, and also their eating routines via gnawing have been to blame for producing fires in roofs and walls.

They are prolific breeders that inside a calendar year a rat may have between 30 -80 young, depending on species whereas one couple might produce 15,000 rats in their life span.

Rodents may press via a opening the dimensions of a twenty cent piece, drop twenty metres without injuries, tread water for three days, consume a variety of foods and endure an atomic bomb blast.  How’s that for constitution.

Different Species of Rodents

Roof Rats

AKA scientific name of Rattusrattus or common name of black rat or the ship rat is accountable for the Black Plague and the death of millions of people from its flea. Its capability to clamber distributed it all through the planet by clambering boats hawsers. It prefers to reside in trees and shrubs and roofs of buildings.

Norway Ray

AKA scientific name of Rattusnorvegicus or Brown rat prefers to dig unlike the roof rat and also favours to dwell in close proximity to drinking water and damp areas. The Norway Rat carries a stouter frame and has a tail that is not as long. Is ears are also not as big when in comparison to the roof rat.

AKA scientific name Musdomesticus. Having a mouse problem tends to be a very much bigger monetary issue compared to rats in Australia, with population densities achieving 32,500 per hectare in plagues. They demand significantly less water than rats, with a shorter pregnancy period plus from 42 days, are at nearly 1/2 the proliferation maturity of the Roof rat.

Mice are distinguished from young rats by way of smaller heads and feet, bigger ears in proportion, and significantly longer tail.

Pest Control & Pesticides (Rodentiticides):Baits and Lures -Since the 1940′s blood thinner chemicals were mainly used as they were anti-coagulant and worked well at the time, this was then superseded by other poisonous lures. Since the previous 10 or so years, rodents have become largely immune to blood thinning chemicals.

Strains of rats can make it through a dosage that is several times more powerful only 10 years ago. Some strains of mice appear typically untouched by it at all.

A major advance took place in the 70′s with the breakthrough of Brodifacoum and Bromadiolone, though resistance is actually commencing to take place. It is worth noting that the roof rat likes succulent meals make use of liquid baits and Norway Rats like dried foods use cereal lures

Methods on How to Get Rid of Mice or Rodents

Rodent (mainly rats and mice) Control

Methods on How to Get Rid of Mice

Mousetraps: Snap boards and tacky traps need to be applied as a backup for lures, or for basic safety reasons. They need to be placed just out from skirting boards, with the bait on the trap close to the walls.

The trap lure has had success for customers is the use of cocoa powder sprinkled on some fresh bread. The advantage of setting the trap with this concoction is It may be smelled some distance away and mice seem to love it. Tie the bread on to the metal tab that holds the bait with some cotton thread. Pulling will set off the trap.

Gassing: Is used for outdoor burrows, in boats and grain silos by the usage of fumigants.

Prevention:  In pest control this means the stopping of entry locations by mechanics means such as bird wire, aluminum sheeting, steel wool or door closes.

Contact Dusts and Gel: Tracking powder or gel may be used where the activity is situated. You can see where they travel and determine this by using a well known D.Y.I. household tip by the usage of talc as a tracking dust.

Prevention: Good cleanliness and confining resource of food and water is the advisable for preventing rodent contaminations.

Rodents actually are repelled by the odour of mint, camphor and pine-tar. Cats and dogs particularly fox terriers are the experts in hunting down small amounts of rodents in the formative reproduction stages.

Rats

Rats in australia

Rats problem in Australia

Have you got a rat problem? Rats are more than just annoying. They are downright dangerous disease spreading rodents that can also cause a great deal of damage to property.

They may even be responsible for starting some house fires particularly in older homes by gnawing through electrical cables.

If you have a colony of rats in close proximity it may be difficult to get rid of them. Rats are nocturnal, so there’s almost no chance you’ll spot them during the day time.

But there is no doubt you will here them in the still of night scurrying around.  Rats are also shy and wary creatures with excellent survival instincts. They’re said to be neophobic which means that they don’t like new things making it difficult to quickly tempt them into a trap, or get them to immediately take to rat bait which is frustrating for the home owner that wishes to trap them.

If those factors didn’t make it difficult enough, rats eventually develop immunity to products that are used to bait and lure them. Products that were successful in the 1940s are no longer of much use. New products developed in the 1970s have proved relatively successful to date however it appears that rats are beginning to develop a resistance to those too.

How do you get rid of rats?

The question remains how do you get rid of rats? Eradicating rats requires a multi-pronged approach. You’re likely to need the help of a qualified pest controller to locate the rats’ nest, establish how the rats are entering the area, and to lay baits safely and in the right places.

A few things that you could do is that rats look for a home that offers them good shelter, a discreet entrance and exit, and a source of food that’s not too far from home. Removing potential sources of food like dry pet food or other stored food items that aren’t properly sealed, and blocking potential entrances fix broken roof tiles, gaps under doors and the like can make your place a lot less inviting.

How tp control Pest Bird

Pest Bird Control

Pest Bird Control

Birds that are considered pest birds include:

Indian Mynah, Common Starling, and Pigeon (Rock Pigeon) species

Indian Mynah Bird:

The Indian Mynah was originally introduced to Australia in order to control locus plagues. It is considered the worst species of pest birds and breeds at very high rates in city areas of the eastern states.

It is in the World conservation Union’s list of Worst one hundred invasive species of bird. The main reasons for concern are due to the mites and disease this bird carries. This pest has been seen to force native birds and also their eggs from out of their nests.

The Rock Pigeon:

This species of pigeon has damages property with acidic feaces including historic old stone buildings. Feral pigeons will cause damage to air-conditioning gear, drainage system, rooftops, and trenches,

Their feces is unsightly and corrosive and also a health risk. This is because of fungi and parasites that live within it.

Common Starlings:

These birds are known to drive native birds to extinction. They are prolific breeders, that when you have gotten rid of 1 flock, they are quickly replaced by newcomers.

Noise is the Starlings enemy and they are frightened off by loud noises, and they may be controlled by using mild electrical shock tape systems. After removing these birds, it is suggested that you should also destroy their nests.

 Sea Gulls:

These pest birds may create similar problems as pigeons. These types of problems are mainly just confined to coastal areas. Also airports tend to be built near bodies of water, so gulls can also threaten to air navigation.

They can be controlled via netting, electrical shock tape, simulated predators and noisemakers.

Options available to Bird Control

There now many pest birds that are now roosting in suburban areas. They are fast becoming a plague in some suburbs of Canberra. Fencing, netting, audio and visual systems are effective in Pest Bird Control.

Bird Netting:

Bird netting is made up of polyethylene twine tied together on steel cables. This will block their access to places where it needs protection.

Pest Bird ControlElectrified Taping

This is used in areas where birds are seen to perch, such as upon roof tops and ledges. This gives the birds get a light electrical charge after landing on it.

This is not enough to cause them harm, but strong enough to encourage them to stay away. These systems may be energized by battery pack, or solar energy.

Bird-Shock Flex-Track is a discreet low-profile ledge roosting deterrent system. It’s very effective against all pest bird species that conditions birds to stay away without causing them harm.

Virtually Invisible:

At around only 6mm high, in a wide variety of colours which can match the building material, Bird-Shock Flex-Track is difficult to see close-up and virtually invisible from a distance.

5 Year Warranty

It is manufactured from UV stabilized PVC and Stainless Steel. This recommended bird management product will be around far much longer than its 5 year warranty.

Bird Spikes

These are impossible for birds to perch on. This will present a surface that birds will not want to roost or land on.

Traps

Trapping is done where legal, is a deterrent program, new birds will fill the places left by the trapped and removed birds.

Audio devices

These play electronic versions of distress calls or species predator squawks to frighten the pest birds away.

Open Space Bird Control

Bird control problems in open or public areas like parks or schools may challenge. Birds roosting in trees may be impossible to get rid of. Only trapping and continued harassment has been successful in the past.

The Eagle Eye is an optical bird deterrent that deters birds without causing injury from protected areas by using light beams that are reflected from sunlight or artificial lighting.

The pyramid with reflecting lights rotates by an electric motor, sending out the beams of light in a menacing to birds pattern. This light spectrum disorients birds that are in flight by limiting their visual perceptions.

This will cause the pest birds to fly away to another destination and this is what we want! Give us a call and find out more information with no pressure to order our services on 0407-065-413.
