First Signs of Flying Termites: Swarmers or Alates?

One of the first signs of a termite infestation is seeing flying termites. These are the ones often confused by most people. They are often called flying ants when in fact they are swarmers or alates.

These termites, both male and female, who have left the main colony look for a new location to establish a new colony, which could be either in your home or close by.

Termites can sometimes swarm at night and are attracted by light sources inside your home. While others can swarm during the day, dry wood termites tend to swarm after rain at different times throughout the year.

Other things to keep on the lookout for when you are looking for signs of termites include when you see discarded wings (swarmers or alates).

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR DISCARDED WINGS! Swarmers or Alates?

The flying termites (swarmers or alates) discard their wings shortly after they find their mate. Once this happens, they both wander off to find a suitable site where they can mate and start their own new colony.

In the beginning, the King and Queen termites care for their young until there are enough soldier workers to take up the job of feeding the nursery. A fully established colony with a King and Queen can continue to grow for up to 10 years.
