What Does Pest Control Mean in Canberra? Call 0407 065 413| Canberra Pest Control!

Canberra Pest Control!

Canberra Pest control now is in the high season the hot weather, drought and bush fires are bringing pests out in their numbers.

As a Canberra pest control professional company with over 30 years of combined experience, I really believe the public needs to be educated on what the expectations are when controlling pests.

You see, say you have cockroaches where there are 20-30 different varieties of species and we treat Australian cockroaches (black ones) in general pest control BUT if it’s German cockroaches sometimes they will require further treatment if it’s an infestation or in a commercial kitchen as they have a quick breeding cycle.

Some pests can be blown in with the wind like spiderlings, lumber or firewood stacked in piles attracts spiders, ants, and termites, trees too close to the house are easy to access to a property, outdoor furniture, toys, lawn not mowed, pets can transport pests and I know no one wants to hear this but its sometimes the lack of general housekeeping that attracts pests also.

Leaving dishes on the sink, not rinsing plates off before placing in the dishwasher, crumbs on the floor, benchtops that are not wiped down and items in the pantry not properly stored with jars not wiped down after use, bins not emptied regularly or bin left too close to the door is a problem.

Those people who keep chickens and throw scraps into the run and pellets left in open containers this attracts rats and mice.

Pests love the kitchen as it has the pest’s main food source both in the domestic and commercial kitchens.

Here are a few tips that may help you detract pests from making a way to your kitchen.

• dishes not left dirty in the sink or dishwasher
• sweep crumbs off floors
• wipe benches
• empty bins more regularly
• put plugs in the sink when not in use
• wipe over the pantry and all jars containing the sauce, keep items in glass containers NO open packets.
• Clean regular splashbacks, exhausts, wipe over stovetops

Any one of these environmental areas ignored can possibly cause pest problems.

As a Canberra pest control company,

we advise our clients on things we can see on the day that can possibly attract pests. As we only use quality chemicals that are applied following closely manufacturer’s directions we know will continue to safely and effectively keep killing pests for a long period of time but be aware we have no control over the environment.

Over the weekend I got a request to re-spray a whole property I asked why that would be required as we were only there 2 weeks prior and not enough time for the treatment to do its work and they replied, “I have insects everywhere!” Being alarmed at this question asked, “have you had 8-12 of anyone insect?” No, the reply was I only saw 1 (true story!).

As the number one priority, we will always keep the safety of property owners, families, pets and our staff by using environmentally safe and effective pest control methods.

If we can help you with any pest control problems please call our friendly Canberra Pest Control team on 0407 065 413.

Do you see black ants and ant nests in Canberra?

Black Ants and Ant Nests in Canberra

black ants

Black Ants and ant nests are one of the most common pest control problems in Canberra these tiny species of ant are call the black house ant (Ridomyrmex glaber) and white footed house ant (Technomyrmex albipes) these ants drive people crazy as one minute there are just a few and like magic next time you look there are many.

The reason why ants and ant nests are difficult to control is that they nest under paths, in wall cavities, in potted plants or garden beds they can even be under the house, roof or come in from a neighbour’s house!

How do I know if I have an ant infestation?

There are a number of signs that you have an ant pest control problem simply the numbers of ants when you open the pantry or if you see them across your bench and no matter how many times you wipe the ants away more come to replace the ones you got rid of!

If you’re worried you have an ant infestation, here are four signs that could confirm your suspicion:

  1. Ants covered exposed food
  2. Your pet’s food bowl has been infiltrated
  3. You notice scout ants walking around
  4. You follow the line of ants from where they are foraging and discover the ant nest

What to do about killing little black ants and ant nests?

There are a few homemade remedies that tend to have limited success but are worth having a try at to get rid of them, but to permanently eradicate them the only way to do this is to call in a reputable pest control company like A1 Pest Control Canberra who will use treatments that they are licensed to use.

In the meantime let’s go back to ingredients you can use to either spray or bait the black ants.

  • Fill a spray bottle with 50/50 water and vinegar spray the trail line
this works well with ammonia mixed the same way.
  • Mix equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar together. Pour the mixture into a shallow container or bowl, then place it near the line of ants. The powdered sugar will attract the ants to the mixture. The ants will take it back to their nest and eat it.
  • Borax (can be found in the laundry section in bigger grocery chains like Coles or Woolworths) bait can be made a few ways one way is to mix 1 part borax with 2 parts peanut butter. This mixture is good as it can be smeared on a wall where the ants are and taken back to the nest.
  • Equal parts of borax and sugar pour over hot water stir until dissolved and then soak cotton balls in the mixture and put the balls in the forage line and near the nest. The sugar attracts the ants who eat the sugar and take it back to the nest – hopefully that is the end of the pest problem.

Helpful tips to keep black ants out of your home.

  • Some of these tips will be obvious and some not. One of the first things you do is get inside the pantry and give sauce, jams and syrup bottles a good wipe down.
  • Keep biscuits and cakes in a container that you can seal.
  • Don’t leave pet food out overnight.
  • Wipe down bench tops sweep up crumbs
  • Regular vacuuming.
  • Check dripping or leaking taps

Part of your home maintenance should always get pest control done at least once a year, more visits are needed for commercial properties where there is food preparation such as restaurants.

A1 Pest Control Canberra uses quality pest control treatments that are effective, environmentally friendly and most important pet and people friendly.

Dead Rat Mice Removal For Pests That Don’t Go Away To Die

Just imagine that you have gone down to Bunnings or similar and purchased some rat bait and you have gone up into the roof void sprinkling the bait around ignoring the directions on the packet as a little more is better, right?

Then a week to a month passes by and you can no longer here scratching and scurrying around and congratulate yourself on a job well done but then you smell something that smells bad and you check the refrigerator for something pushed to the back that may have turned green but on this occasion can’t find anything.

The smell continues and you wipe out the kitchen bins as that may be the problem but the smell persists and now can’t be ignored it’s overpowering.

This happened to a customer of ours who while stirring a pot on the stove live maggots fell from the exhaust fan into what she was cooking.

A1 Pest Control Canberra finds and removes dead bodies of pests that get trapped and die, we also put in an odour bag that absorbs the smell almost immediately NOT mask the smell gets rid of the smell.

We get call outs all the time for either pre-inspection or for general inspection looking for termites. That is fine for those that we write reports for saying that there are “no termites” that is all that the owner wants to see on the report for peace of mind and especially if they are selling the property.

There are times though that we find termites and we inform the customer that there are live termites in their property.

We discuss the plan in detail of what needs to happen first including discussing the barrier and if there are live termites we chase them out first.

We do this with either Termidor foam or we use a dust where we treat the termites and as they are social insects that they rub up against each other and the dust is transferred from one termite to the other killing all the termites as they make their way back to the nest.

We recently had a client that did not want the barrier put down and only wanted the live termites chased out that was nearly 12 months ago this week we were called back and the woman now wants the barrier put in but she has had builders in who are replacing gyprock and beams as the termites had returned again.

The builders cost for replacement was $80K and she needs to pay this out of her own pocket as it’s not covered by insurance. For the cost of the barrier seems small in comparison to the damage that termites can do.

We use mainly chemical barriers as this gives the owner $2M 8 year warranty against the termites returning NO other treatment will give this assurance.  We recommend that either a visual or thermal imaging be performed annually to protect your property. Please call our team on 0407 065 413

They look harmless enough when there are just a few of them but if they are building colonies under your home they head for the ceiling and where they eat dry rot and termite larvae that is where they can cause damage if they are left undetected

These hardworking black sugar ants are also call carpenter ants and are one of the most common sort of ant coming in various sizes.

If you have a little ant problem that you have ignored thinking that last dose or pesticide you blasted with will be the end of them you are very mistaken as they have returned and can be seen coming out of the PowerPoint, and coming out of the dishwasher and out of other appliances. Not content with what they are doing they are now in your pantry spoiling your food!

Off the shelf, products are not strong enough to fix the problem you need to call our team on 0407 065 413 we are fully licensed with safe, effective environmentally friendly products.

At times there are baits put down in your roof as that is where you have heard the scratching going on and you think “great we got rid of them” but over the days there is a smell that seems to be getting stronger and you can’t find where it is coming from.

After checking the fridge for something that maybe off in the darkest corners and throwing a few containers out that were forgotten and now growing a new life form but now know that the smell is getting worse it could possibly be a dead rodent!!!

There is nothing worse than decaying rats or mice the smell just won’t go away and if in summer you will have flys and maggots on the body as well – this is not definitely something for anyone with a weak stomach!

We can solve your problem as we will removed the bodies of the dead rodent and replace with an odour bag. These bags DO NOT MASK the odour like many products our bags absorb the odour.

Call Bob 0407 065 413 we will fix this problem and any other pest problems for domestic and commercial properties – quickly, efficiently and safely.

As the end of financial year draws near there is no better time for landlords to ensure preventative maintenance is done on your rental property.

Having either a termite inspection or general pest control is a way to keep your property free from termites or general creepy crawlies and have a legitimate tax deduction at the same time.

Check with your CPA but as termites are not covered under general insurance having an inspection on your rental property just makes sense.

Call Bob 0407 065 413 he can do either a visual inspection or use the latest thermal imaging technology to see problems before the damage is done!

Colder weather brings many pests indoors and literally we make it easy for possums especially by giving them access through vines that grow up on the house or trellis that is too close to the roof. From there its easy access through a loose or broken tile into your roof void.

Here the possums will be able to sleep during the day and then leave to search for food during the night. This may seem to be harmless activity until they start breeding, fighting and chasing each other. Possums travel in pairs and mate for life.

To the unsuspecting home owner this disrupts sleep and from the owners bed it sounds like they are running with army boots on!

We are registered with TAMS to be able to trap and release possums, we can point out where the possums are gaining entry and advise the home owner to trim back trees, fix tiles or air conditioning ducts that have not been sealed correctly.

Another pest that gains access in a similar way is bush rats and sometimes we find through investigating droppings its NOT a possum but rats. We can then bait the rats and that should end your sleepless nights.

Possum Catchers Hints and Tips

Those cute little big eyed possums are great in the wild but let them find their way to your roof void through broken tiles or not properly sealed cooling/heating units your peaceful nights will be no more!

In fact when you are getting ready to close your eyes the possums are ready to party and they do and scurry in your roof like they have army boots on, fight and mate that will keep you awake or disturb your sleep.

Bob and the team get called out regularly to trap/relocate possums and people think that they have only one possum but that is not true they travel in pairs with their mate and customers are very surprised when we do trap the 2nd possum.

– never leave food out for possums as this encourages them to return

– rake up fallen fruit from fruit trees

– trim back bushes and shrubs from outside the house by a metre

– get rid of vines growing on the house as they are easy access to your roof

– check that installed air conditioning is properly sealed
– don’t leave pet food bowls with any food left in it outside

A1 Pest Control Canberra are one of only a few pest control companies that are fully licensed by TAMS to catch and release possums.

We can also hire the traps out for those that want to do this themselves (POA).

A1 Pest Control Canberra – Advanced Termite Inspections

A1 Pest Control Canberra is a family owned business that was founded by Jenny Jordan and Bob Waters in November 2011. Pest Control is in their veins as Jenny’s brother Bruce Gow has worked in the business for over 35 years!

Since the beginning Bob has used his background in customer service that has surpassed his client’s expectations with being able to book an appointment at the time the client wants but also has his staff deliver education on how to prevent insects and pest from returning to how to get the most out of your treatments.

Jenny and Bob started humbly and the staff were and still are family members “until recently due to the expansion of the company we ran out of family members” says Bob!
Luckily also Jenny Jordan has a marketing background and is the person how promotes the company.

Bob saw the need for more thorough Termite Inspection instead of using the usual visual methods of tapping and evidence of termite activity which really is not inclusive since access may not be possible due to weather conditions or the size of the entry area which would prevent inspection. Bob seeing the benefit of thermal imagining invested heavily in education and accreditation of Thermal Imaging.

Bob states that using the imaging technology gives him the edge over his competitors as it picks up not only body heat from the termites it also picks up moisture and maintenance problems for the home owner long before that it is seen by visual means. This saves the home owner thousands of dollars by treating areas before they become a problem.

With Bob’s attention to detail and a mass of satisfied repeat customers A1 pest control  Canberra continues to be in demand for residential, commercial and government contracts like DHA (Defence Force Housing) Schools, Construction, Real Estate agencies

A1 Pest Control Canberra uses only environmentally pet and family safe chemical treatments

Nothing like the start of spring that makes everything grow and the insects and pests start tobe noticed again.

Termites are the silent pests and you really are not aware that they are around until you see evidence or damage first hand. If you are out in the garden take a look at trees, fence lines or the tree you cut down and left the stump as that is what they love – soft wood. People are under the impression that insurance covers the damage these pests cause and 99% insurance policies DO NOT cover termite damage.

We offer a $2M 8 year assurance policy when we do our termite barriers so definitely worth getting us to inspect and or treat your property as we use only quality treatments

We get a lot of call outs for these pest and if there is one thing I will say is DON’T disturb them at all we have protective clothing and they still manage to sting us. What happens is that when disturbed the whole nest attacks and unlike bees who sting once they sting multiple times.

If your in the garden be careful as European wasps nest can sometimes be underground. We had a nest that was the size of a basketball that we removed last season.

We know that bees are in the news at the moment and we always refer our calls to beekeepers to remove unwanted nests but there are times when bees can not be accessed and they become a risk to humans when they are inside walls and hard to get to places and we need to kill them so that they don’t sting humans and pets.

Like spring cleaning now is a great time to treat your property with a general pest treatment. We get asked about spiders and we can treat those for you and will spray their webs, many people though get a broom after we go to take down the web not thinking the treatment will be active for many weeks to come to new spiders that visit the web. So leave the web up for 3-5 weeks for longer term treatment.

At A1 Pest Control Canberra, we help keep your family, home and business safe from pests. Our professionally trained staff are always on hand to help answer your pest problems no matter the pest problem is we have the solution! However, you too can play a part in helping to protect your property from unwanted pests. Here are some simple tips and tricks for easy pest prevention.

  1. Try pest prevention first.

Keep your place spick and span! You might think that is an obvious tip for keeping your home pest free, but it’s with the simplest jobs that we can be most careless! Here are some ways to keep your place pest free.

  • Remove sources of food, water and shelter.
  • Store food in sealed plastic or glass containers. Garbage containing food scraps should be placed in tightly covered trash cans. Remove garbage regularly from your home.
  • Fix leaky plumbing and don’t let water accumulate anywhere in the home. Don’t let water collect in trays under your houseplants or refrigerator. Don’t leave pet food and water out overnight.
  • Clutter provides places for pests to breed and hide and makes it hard to get rid of them. Get rid of things like stacks of newspapers, magazines, or cardboard.
  • Close off places where pests can enter and hide. For example, caulk cracks and crevices around cabinets or baseboards. Use steel wool to fill spaces around pipes.
  • Cover any holes with wire mesh.
  • Learn about the pests you have and options to control them.
  • Check for pests in packages or boxes before carrying them inside.

Maintain your home. Keeping your home in good condition is important for a safe and healthy environment for your family. It also makes your house more welcoming for you and your family and less inviting for pests!

  • Seal up the house – all cracks, windows, floors and doors
  • Regularly check roofing and walls for any signs of decay – anything that could become a potential home for pests – Mow lawns and trim plants regularly
  • Avoid any buildup of clutter both inside and outside the home – keep a good distance between any wood piles, compost bins, etc. and your home

Don’t use outdoor chemicals indoors. Many chemicals intended for use outdoors are dangerous to use indoors because they will remain toxic longer inside than they would outdoors.

Don’t assume that twice as much is better. Always read and follow label directions.

Don’t transfer pesticides to other containers. Store pesticides in their original containers. Only mix as much as you are going to use at one time if the pesticide must be mixed with water. And most importantly, don’t use empty pesticide containers to store anything else.

This may result to confusion and eventually can lead to poisoning. Learning about the pests you have and options that are available to control specific pests is also helpful to pest control within your home or business.

There are many preventative measures you can take but sometimes this is not enough call

While you might enjoy going out and traveling to places, it is an undeniable fact that pests are trying to get in. They’re not all trying to grab a snack from your kitchen, many emerge from winter hiding once temperatures rise and begin looking for food and water.
How do you keep the pests at bay?

Here are some natural remedies to keep pests away from your property:

Ants- Ants are one of the most frequent home invaders and one of the easiest to deal with in a sweet-smelling, natural way. You can also cut cucumber in small slices and place them on the likely entry point of ants in your kitchen. Bitter cucumber slices works better. If you don’t have the above-mentioned remedies, soap water spray works good against ants.

Mosquitoes- If you want a mosquito-free surrounding, you can consider lemon. Lemon grass, lemon-scented Pelargoniums (commonly sold as scented geraniums) and lemon balm are some of the ones you can keep in pots or in the garden. Lemon balm is a mint and like all mints, you’ll never have to think about it again after planting except maybe to cut it back to keep it under control. Speaking of mint, rubbing it on your skin is also an effective way to repel biting bugs.

Furthermore, it is very necessary to keep your surroundings airy and clean, take concrete measures to remove standing water sources where , mosquitoes might nest in.

Flies- The best way to keep away flies is to keep your house and surroundings clean and neat. In both kitchen and bathroom keep the drains free and clean of debris. Small sachets of mint leaves in crushed form can be placed around the home to restrict flies entering your house.

Cockroaches- We use many products available in the market to keep away roaches. The best way to keep them out of your kitchen is to keep your kitchen clean and very neat. Soap solution spray can instantly kill cockroaches if sprayed directly.

In both kitchen and bathroom keep the drains free and clean of debris. And make sure your garbage cans and compost bin lids are fit securely not only to keep insects away but four-legged pests.

However, if the pests get out of hand, it is just appropriate to admit that you need the help of experts in removing them from your property. Call Bob on 0407 065 413 for all of your pest concerns TODAY. Or go to our site A1 Pest Control Canberra for further information and education.

With possums they always travel in pairs and when there is 2 you may get the whole family before you know it! They come indoors to shelter from the cold and to breed.

While they are cute to look at they make a lot of noise at night and will fight and run around keeping you awake.

There are many people who say they are licensed to trap and release possums but few do go to the trouble of getting a TAMS license – we are fully licensed and look forward to delivering you the awesome customer services that we are known for.

Tips on identifying and controlling German Cockroaches

German cockroaches are prevalent in the Unites States and are present worldwide. They contaminate spaces by spreading germs and bacteria.  The adult cockroaches are recognized by their tan color. They can also be light brown with two black horizontal stripes located behind their heads. They can grow up to 13-16mm in length. The young ones are almost black in color and have black stripes. In adult German cockroaches, wings are present, but they are rarely used to fly.

Habits, Diet, and Behavior

German cockroaches are commonly known to stay indoors in tropical environments. They prefer to remain in warmer, more humid areas. These cockroaches are usually found in bathrooms and kitchens, but can also move to different parts of the house where moisture and food are available.

German cockroaches can be introduced to residences when boxes and bags are brought into the house. Infestation can also occur through used appliances. In apartments, these insects use pipes and plumbing as a highway to move quickly from place to place.

They are scavengers and are capable of feeding on most food items. This includes soap, bindings of books and toothpaste. They have the ability to capitalize on even small amounts of food, like feeding on the dirty dishes left in the sink or crumbs missed out during cleaning.

German cockroaches are known to reproduce quickly. Female cockroaches will produce an average of 4 to 6 egg cases during their lifetimes. Each egg case contains  20 to 40 eggs. This case is carried by the female until 1 to 2 days before hatching. Depending on the conditions, it takes around 100 days to grow into an adult. After the German cockroaches become adults, they can survive for 100 to 200 days.

Prevention Methods To Control German Cockroaches

When you begin your German cockroaches control program, remember sanitation is one the first things to consider.

  • Clean any food particles or crumbs in your kitchen
  • Keep trash dumpsters clean
  • Vacuum and sweep any food particles
  • Keep dishes clean
  • Ensure that kitchen appliances are clean and free of grease or food
  • Frequently run the garbage disposal and make sure no food is left in sink strainers
  • Remove indoor trash and keep dustbins empty.
  • If you have pets, make sure all pet food crumbs are picked up

Chemical control

Baiting is an effective way to eliminate or control an infestation of German cockroaches . To protect your house from pests use Chemical pesticides containing hydra methylone, fipronil, or boric acid which provide a high-level of control. Apply these to areas where cockroaches have harbored. Use these on crevices of bureaus and cracks, ceiling light fixtures, hollow legs of chairs, shelves, and walls. If you have kids or pets at home, make sure they do not come in contact with these products. Remember to read the instructions on the labels before you use any of these.

The use of repellent sprays or aerosol foggers can also limit the infestation of German cockroaches.

Remember to always keep your environment clean and tidy, to avoid a cockroach infestation.  Take preventive measures as soon as possible to keep these pests at bay. Before using any chemical pesticides read and follow the instructions. Keep these away from children and pets. In case you cannot control them using these methods, it is best to call a professional pest controller.
