Protect your property from termites

With their ability to silently destroy properties, termites are known to be one of the most destructive insects in the world.  These pests may be small, yet they can damage huge buildings and structures without being noticed, leading to significant financial losses for property owners. That is why termite is one of the reasons people end up seeking pest control services.

While pest control treatments can effectively eliminate termites, preventing these insects from entering your property will save you from a lot of trouble. As a pro-active measure, professional pest control companies offer termite barriers that are designed to protect homes and buildings from termites.

As a property owner, there are a lot of things that you should know about termites control and prevention. We’ve answered some of the most common questions that property owners have regarding termite prevention and elimination.

How many termite varieties are there?

In Australia, there are about 360 termite species. However, three termite varieties are commonly found in a termite infestation in Australia: Subterranean termites, Dampwood termites, and Drywood termites.

Which termites cause damage to a property?

While the majority of termites are beneficial to the ecosystem, there are certain species of termite that damage structural properties. These destructive termites are Subterranean termites, Dampwood termites, and Drywood termites.

Considered as one of the world’s most damaging pests, subterranean termites are known for their destructive effects on wood structures. As their survival depends on moisture, subterranean termites create their nest on moist ground.  On the other hand, dampwood termites feast on moist rotting wood. They cause damages to wooden structures of buildings by creating big passageways in the areas where they live. Another termite that damages properties are drywood termites. Existing inside the timber itself, these pests infest both hardwood and softwood timber.

How do you protect your property from termite damage?

As protection from termite invasion, your property needs to undergo an annual termite inspection. There are two ways to conduct a termite inspection: visual inspection and thermal imaging.

A visual termite inspection covers areas of your property that are visually accessible. The technician will identify termite activities in those areas and pinpoint the termite species that exist in the property. On the other hand, thermal imaging termite inspection makes use of a thermal imaging camera to detect termites with accuracy. Using the camera, the technician will scan walls and other wooden structures. The heat emitted by the camera helps find termites that cannot be detected through visual inspection.

What product do we recommend for effective termite elimination?

To put an end to a termite infestation, we highly recommend using Termidor, a non-repellent chemical that offers several benefits. First, Termidor is known for its “transfer effect”, which effectively eliminates not only a single termite but an entire colony. Secondly, Termidor is a safe chemical to use because its main ingredient, Fipronil, is safe for humans, as well as pets like dogs and cats. Lastly, Termidor guarantees a long-term effect, which can last for up to 8 years.

What should you do when you discover termites in your property?

Once you confirm the existence of termites, you should contact an experienced pest control technician right away. At A1 Pest Control Canberra, the technicians apply BASF Termidor dust on the termites.  Since these pests are blind and are social insects by nature, these termites will carry the BASF Termidor dust on their bodies and rub it up against other termites whenever they meet. This is an effective way to spread the pesticide and eliminate the entire termite colony. The Termidor will kill the termites even before they come back to their nest.

What should you avoid when you discover termites in your property?

Avoid any movement that may disturb termites. Any attempt to remove termites on your own may disturb these pests. Once they feel threatened, they will retreat underground, making it even more difficult to solve the termite problem. Termites may even transfer to another part of the property when they get disturbed in their original location.

What are Termite Barriers and how long do they last?

Termite barriers are materials installed into the structure of your home or building to block termites and prevent them from entering your property. These barriers are designed to give structures long-term protection against termites. Depending on the type of termite barrier and stage when it was installed (i.e., pre or post-construction), some termite barriers may last up to 20 years.

What are the types of termite barriers?

Termite barriers come in two forms: physical barriers and chemical barriers.

Physical barriers refer to the materials that serve as a physical blockage against termites. Installation of this type of termite barrier is required by the Building Code of Australia in the construction of new properties and all renovation projects.  If designed and installed by professional pest control technicians, physical termite barriers will make sure that termites will not enter the structure.

On the other hand, chemical barriers refer to liquid chemicals applied to the soil to protect your property from termites. The chemical is applied around the border of the foundation of your property or under concrete flooring.

How much does a termite barrier cost?

Protecting one’s property from damages caused by termites comes with a price. Generally, you will have to spend between $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the linear measurement of your property and subfloor. While this may mean additional expense, every property owner should consider spending for termite barrier as a preventive measure. Damages caused by termites will surely be more expensive than any termite barrier treatment. If you will not prevent termites from entering your structures, you then need to have further pest control treatment and bear with expensive property repair costs.

A1 Pest Control Canberra’s team of fully licensed termite specialists with over 25 years of experience in termite management systems can help solve your termite problem. With a vast knowledge of termites, our pest control experts will conduct a termite inspection on your property to point out high-risk areas. Through our inspection report, we will recommend options to solve your termite problem. As a property owner, you have the opportunity to choose the termite solution most suitable for your situation.

The amazing thing about termites is that they travel so far from their nest to feed their growing colony. When I talk of colonies the Queen Termite is just amazing she can produce 30,000 live termites a day!!

The soldier termites bring back the wood and regurgitate their food to feed their Queen and their young.

What is also amazing is that the termites are blind which makes it all the more extraordinary BUT their sense of smell is acute to find the timber that they need to survive.

ACTIVE termites in one colony can add up to the millions in a month and out of the the 30,000 live termites born a day only 2 of them will leave the colony to start their own NEW colony and the whole cycle will begin again.

The new colonies will sometimes target the house next door, across the road or sometimes they skip a few houses in search of their desired timber meal.

This is why it is IMPORTANT to have regular termite inspections once a year is a small price to pay against a repair bill up to $40,000 for a new roof (house in Chisholm 2 months ago).

Termite management plan and why you need a termite barrier is something that we talk over with you the property owner and cover all of the various options so you can make an informed decision and select the best option to protect your property.

We break down the termite management plan in order for you to know the risks and benefits or dealing with termite attacks as we know that it can be a worrying time for the owner in not knowing what steps are to be taken should if any should live termites be found.

Some owners take a gamble and hope that after we treat the property that the live termites will not come back when there is NO guarantee that they won’t come back in fact they often do but in another section of the property.

When they are discovered they go and hide underground and at times come back to the same property in another area of the property.

The best protection is to have installed a chemical termite barrier and we highly recommend Termidor for the $2M 8 year assurance given that the termites will NOT return.

Call us on 0407 065 413 to talk about your termite management plan and by all means do not gamble by not having an annual inspection as it could cost you a lot of money

Pre-Construction Termite Barriers – A1 Pest Control Canberra

Why you need a pre-construction termite barriers

One of the most important decisions you will make when building your property is how to protect your investment against termites and there is no better way to do this at the time with a pre-construction termite barrier. A1 Pest Control Canberra is a trusted installer and well known amongst builders.

The purpose of a termite management system is to deter hidden termite entry and stop the risk of termite attack.

Why Pre-Construction Termite Barriers Are Important?

  • Termites and are active in all mainland areas of Australia
  • 34,000 homes each year are attacked by termites
  • The average damage cost is approximately $10,000.00 with some homes having to be knocked down completely!
  • Insurance does NOT cover Termite damage steel roof homes are not termite proof. Other areas of the home are still vulnerable to termite attack. For example, timber floor, kitchen and bathroom cabinets, even electrical wiring problems.

 Did you know….

Under the Building Regulations, your new home must be fitted with a termite management system or be built with termite resistant structural materials?

As the new property owner you can choose the type of termite protection installed before the commencement of construction this is the only opportunity you have.

A1 Pest Control Canberra has been installing termite pre-construction termite barriers and post construction barriers for the older properties for many years, in fact we are the experts when it comes to termites’ period.

As specialist in termite barriers leading builders sought our help and advice when it comes to help choosing the right termite management system for the property.

A few of the options we have but not limited to include:

  • Chemical Reticulation Soil Treatment Systems
These are rechargeable, piping systems that deliver liquid termiticide the soil next to critical areas under and around the house. The treated soil is a deterrent to termites. As any termiticide will break down in a few years, reticulation systems offer the benefit of being able to retreatment the soil without disruption.
  • Hand Sprayed Chemical Soil Treatments
Mainly now only used in Western Australia, this method involves the application of a termiticide to the soil under the slab, garage floor and around the outside walls. The treated soil is a deterrent to termites. To increase the level of protection with this method, we also install other service penetrations. The perimeter chemically treated soil will break down within 5 years and further re-treatments will be required to maintain the effectiveness of the soil to ensure that the treatment remains effective.Trithor is a unique Thermo-compression Technology™ that locks the deltamethrin into the inner core before it is laminated top and bottom with a rugged plastic membrane. This means it is non-hazardous to anyone handling the product or who comes into contact with it. This product has a 50-year warranty with it. Trithor is an exceptionally tough and flexible termite security system, with proven performance that doesn’t cost the earth.

What do they look for in a termite inspection?

What do they look for in a termite inspection is structural and moisture issues can include standing water on the roof, pooling water around the foundation, wood mulch close to the foundation, and wooden deck supports that touch the soil. A termite inspector looks for visible signs of termite infestation, including wood damage, mud tubes, buckling of the walls, spongy soft to the touch spots on and around door frames.

Included in the termite inspection may also include the following.

The inspection could include a checklist that is started from room to room that would include checking the roof, supporting beams, around door frames and leaking plumbing in the wet areas. Leading into the garden the inspector would be looking along the fence line for fence damage and trees in the yard and garden beds and pergola stirrups to see if the wood touches the ground.

Report that gives a follow up

The termite inspector would put together a report on what his findings and recommendations for the property. The report would also have recommendations on problem areas that could attract termites in future and if live termites are found there would be an action plan that would be discussed in detail with the owner.

LIVE Termites Stage 1 – the “chase out”

One of the recommendations would not only get rid of the termites commonly called the “chase out” where the termites are dusted and as they are very social would rub up against each other killing them off and eventually killing the Queen termite.

Stage 2 – Installing a termite barrier

After chasing the termites out there is no guarantee the termites would not attack the property again and then consideration would need to be given to install a termite barrier to protect the property and stop the termites gaining entry.

There are 2 main termite barriers which are commonly used the first is a chemical barrier where a small shallow trench is dug that encircles the property and under the piers and chemicals are inject into the ground in close proximity and the soil is replaced and you would not even be aware that the barrier has been installed.

We use a product called Termidor which has a $2M 8-year assurance that gives the owner peace of mind.

Bait stations are the other commonly used barrier where stations are dug into the earth and pieces of wood are inside the station and then the bait stations are supposed to be checked regularly to see if the termites have taken the bait.

The trouble is that these stations are often forgotten to be checked giving no assurance that the termites have not invaded the property.

What Are Termites Attracted To and Why Termite Damage is Preventable?

Great question, what are termites attracted to and why termite damage is preventable.

Let’s start to talk about termite habitat:

Termites are attracted to warm, dark, moist areas where the Queen termite can eat, live and then start to lay hundreds of live termites in her nest while the worker termites key objective is to look for timber to feed the Queen and the workers start mud tracts to lead to the food source.

Any damp areas within your home are likely to attract termites, particularly places where there’s plenty of wood.

• Don’t store wood piles and lean it close to the house or garage
• If there are leaky taps or pipes fix them and pay special attention to the garden tap outside that is close to the house
• If you have posts for pergola in contact with the soil or fences that are not treated the termites have a field day with this.
• If you have taken down a tree grind it into the ground as this is the perfect termite fodder.

I have talked about case studies where people have put the key in the door and the door has fallen backwards on the floor as the termites had eaten all the doorframes! Or the homeowner that thought they had termites and took down the sheeting and disturbed the termites and they scattered.

The home owner was smart enough to call in a pest control company (US) and although they had left the bedroom which is fine BUT you can’t be guaranteed that they will not return so you could very well replace the sheeting only to have the termites return.

We inspected in the roof void and here they were alive and well.

Why Termite Damage is Preventable?

As you can see there are many things you can check to ensure to minimize attracting termites and also having a termite inspection on an annual basis is a good practice to get into but the one thing that deters termites is a termite barrier we use termite chemical barriers as it has $2M 8 year assurance and NO other company can give that guarantee.
Ring our team today on 0407 065 413.

Now you know what attracts termites and why termite damage is preventable.

If you see ants with wings they are called termite swarmers or alates and really they are an unwelcome visitor to any property owner. When you see these insects it is a sign that the colony is in close vicinity to the property or worse still the property could already be infected with termites.

What are termite swarmers? Termite swarmers are winged termites whose main role in life is reproducing and creating new termite colonies. They look for a suitable mate to be the future termite kings and queens will swarm and find suitable locations for their own colonies.

Emerging from tubes built by worker termites, termite swarmers range in color from yellow to black depending on the species. Like many other flying insects, termites are attracted to light and are often seen swarming around exterior lighting or window sills.

If you have seen what you believe to be termite swarmers at your property or elsewhere in your garden, it is highly recommend that you contact an expert pest control like A1 Pest Control Canberra as soon as possible.

Funny story we detected live termites in a property and the landlord got another quote and was told there are “NO” live termites there!

One of the team members went back out to show the customer where the termites were and the customer declined the offer of getting a pair of overalls on so we offered to make a video.

Still she was unconvinced that we would not be using an old video so the technician got a piece of paper with a red circle on it and then took a the VIDEO.

Low and behold the pictures are what we captured along with opening up the mud track and live termites climbed onto the paper.

With live termites now shown the response of the customer was “we will think about it!” No disrespect there is NO time to THINK about it as they are inside the home there will be NO home left to think about!

LIFE LESSON people cut back on the wrong things and just imagine had we not gone back to the property to make the customer aware! What about a pest company that tapped around threw his hands up and said NO LIVE termites!

If you want a more thorough termite inspection contact OUR team we are termite experts and if we are not sure we will use thermal imaging T3i the latest technology. Don’t leave your property to chance.

Do you know how every picture tells a story? For me this picture says it all because its meaning is you get what you pay for.

We know we are not the cheapest pest control you can get and we are not the most expensive either BUT what happens when we go to your property you are getting quality products and service.

There are some of our competitors that use products that are of a lesser quality and we can nearly guess that your problem will not be fixed and will have the same problem over and over again.

Also we are aware that people use cheaper products and still are expensive BUT know that we use Termidor for termite barriers as it’s the ONLY product on the market that will give $2M 8 year assurance on the termites NOT coming back – that is how certain they are.

We get call outs all the time for either pre-inspection or for general inspection looking for termites. That is fine for those that we write reports for saying that there are “no termites” that is all that the owner wants to see on the report for peace of mind and especially if they are selling the property.

There are times though that we find termites and we inform the customer that there are live termites in their property.

We discuss the plan in detail of what needs to happen first including discussing the barrier and if there are live termites we chase them out first.

We do this with either Termidor foam or we use a dust where we treat the termites and as they are social insects that they rub up against each other and the dust is transferred from one termite to the other killing all the termites as they make their way back to the nest.

We recently had a client that did not want the barrier put down and only wanted the live termites chased out that was nearly 12 months ago this week we were called back and the woman now wants the barrier put in but she has had builders in who are replacing gyprock and beams as the termites had returned again.

The builders cost for replacement was $80K and she needs to pay this out of her own pocket as it’s not covered by insurance. For the cost of the barrier seems small in comparison to the damage that termites can do.

We use mainly chemical barriers as this gives the owner $2M 8 year warranty against the termites returning NO other treatment will give this assurance.  We recommend that either a visual or thermal imaging be performed annually to protect your property. Please call our team on 0407 065 413

Imagine this. you have or are buying a property and you see it has had a visual termite inspection but what jumps out at you on the report is one or more of the following.

• Not able to gain access to the subfloor
• Wet weather could not access the roof etc.

Termites gain access when dirt meets wood if they can not gain access through the dirt they build mud tracks that can reach up to 7 feet tall to gain entry to your home.

Do you take a gamble and hope like hell there are no termites in the areas that were not able to gain entry?

Let me tell you something, you may gamble that there were no termites in that area but recently we have been called in where people DO find termites 6 months after moving in to their property OR a potential buyer orders a thermal image inspection and finds termites which delays the sale as the buyer negotiates to factor this treatment into lowering the price or at worse walks away from buying the property altogether.

Thermal imaging can pick up termite body heat and movement through walls, floors and under the house it will even pick up house faults like leaking pipes behind walls this saves you thousands of dollars.

Reduce the risk of a termite infestation in your home:

• Repair any water leaks and moisture issues. Water-damaged walls, leaks in roofs, bathrooms and sink areas create favorable conditions for termites to flourish.

• Clean gutters and repair downspouts. Keep gutters clear and free-flowing to avoid clogs which may eventually lead to water damage.

• Drain water away from exterior walls and foundation. Ensure all drain lines, such as air conditioner drainage lines, release water at least 30.48 cm or 12 inches away from the foundation.

• Trim back shrubs and landscape plants from exterior walls. Shrubs and plants can trap moisture, which is critical for termite survival. Over-grown plants can provide a hidden avenue for termites and prevent thorough visual inspection.

• Keep ground cover below the bottom of the exterior siding. Ground cover, such as mulch and pine straw, that has built up over the bottom of wall coverings, provide a hidden avenue for termites. Ground cover should be at least 15.24cm or 6 inches below the bottom of exterior wall coverings.

• Monitor irrigation systems. Ensure sprinklers are adjusted properly to spray away from foundation and walls.

Ensure you have a comprehensive termite inspection by a professional termite company. At A1 Pest Control Canberra, our inspections can use the state of the art thermal imaging to see pests before they can do damage.

FREE Pest Control Tips – Canberra Call 0407 065 413

A1 Pest Control Canberra takes pride in doing a little extra for their customers which comes as a nice surprise for customers that have not used our services before.

I have noticed not just with the pest control industry but services that I have hired to do the odd jobs around the home or have something fixed the tradesman will first give you a 4-5 hour window that they may come around to do the job.

This is highly impractical for those that will need to take a half day off from their job and sit and wait for the tradesman, many times though there is no courtesy call to even say “I will be there in 30 minutes!” More often and not you need to cool your heels and just wait for them to turn up.

When they eventually do turn up one eye is on the clock the other on the job that they are doing. Sound familiar?

When pest control is required and using larger franchise companies they too also run the same way and I suppose when comparing ourselves as a family owned and operated pest control company I think we can take a bow.

Pest Control Tips will help you by:

  • Better preparing you with tips before we arrive.
  • Ensuring that we know if you have pets so we can advise you what to do on the day of the treatment.
  • Educating you on the pest problem that you have.
  • Tips to get more for your money after we have gone.

I have been telling a few horror stories of what has happened when property owners do not have regular termite inspections here is another story of 3 strikes and your out – please read on.

Bob and the team were called out to O’Connor (Nth Canberra) and its not the first time that we have found live termites in their home but the owner thought that by us chasing the termites out that would be enough to get rid of his problem – wrong!

The termites had attacked the house in the opposite direction and again we mentioned the termite barrier to be installed asap to protect the house from further invasion but we got “I will think about and give you a call”

3 months now past and we got another call same address HELP the termites have been found in another area of the home and “we want them GONE for good when can you do the job!”

Finally, common sense prevailed and not we are installing a chemical barrier with 8 year 2 million dollar assurance that the termites WILL NOT be back!

We have worked out that the damage done the termite barrier would of saved them money if they got it done the first time before any further damage was done.

A1 Pest Control Canberra – Termite Specialists

Why do we call ourselves termite specialists? I guess it has to do with the fact that we go over and beyond what is expected of a pest control company that we take pride in our work and want to help everyone of our customers get protection from the damage that termites can do.

It’s the fact that we invest in our own education that keeps us a step in front of the pack so we are aware of any changes in technology or new treatments that have come onto the market place that give better safer results we would want to know that too to pass onto our customers.

Many times we are called in and amazed at those that have come in before us and stated that there are “NO” termites and have just taken the inspection money and run where on closer inspection its very evident that there are termites.

Perhaps the other company didn’t go all the way under the house to check for evidence of termites or otherwise they would not of missed the mud tracks left by the termites?

Or they inspected the property on a wet day and was not able to gain access to a roof due to weather on the day, who knows all we know if there is one area that is miss or overlooked its like giving termites the keys to the house!

Our mission is to save you money and to use not only the tools we use visually, but to offer you newer technology like thermal imaging that detects moisture, body heat and movement of termites but also alerts you the owner of potential plumbing and electrical issues as well.

Weather does not prevent us from checking on roofs and checking under the house as the thermal imaging can detect through all surfaces.

I also know that we use only superior products like Termidor that give a $2million dollar 8 year warranty and we feel that alone gives the customers peace of mind when choosing a termite specialist.

We always choose people over profits and this also sets us aside from our competitors who will use a cheaper product and increase the price.

VIDEO A1 Pest Control Canberra – Termite Talk

Its strange what you come across in the pest control business – just when you have thought you have seen it all up pops something that you may have read about but not ever seen for yourself.

Did you know that termite King and Queen only fly once and that is to find where they will make their new colony. Once there the wings fall off the Queen’s whole purpose is to produce thousands upon thousands of termites daily.

How interesting is that!

Listen to the story here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZyrrinp6Fs&feature=youtu.be

The soldier termites go out and find the soft sap wood that they know that the Queen loves to eat and the termites build their mud tracks straight to the soft wood.

Only last week Bob and his team were called out to a property when they had cut the tree down in their backyard and did not grind the stump down. The family decorated the bare stump with gnomes and pot plants not knowing that there was a colony of termites busily eating away at the soft

The pest control team started their investigation and opened the stump to reveal not just one Queen but another 8 Queens – you see there is only one fertile Queen the others are her replacement should something happen to her, the soldiers are infertile and their job in life is to feed the Queen and to protect the colony.

Bob followed the mud tracks into the house silently eating away the door frames of the newly renovated bathroom.

Anyway, I hope you got to have a good look at the video and then get back to us if we can help you with a termite inspection either visual or with our T3i thermal imaging to ensure that we can identify if you have termites and if you have devise a plan on how to best treat the problem.

Discovers 9 Queen Termites

A1 Pest Control Canberra Discovers 9 Queen Termites!

Today we sent the team out to Kambah for a termite inspection on a tree that was cut down last year and the stump had been decorated with gnomes.

We found the colony and in the royal chamber there were 9 Queen Termites. This will mean after the chase out we will be doing a barrier around the house to protect the home from the termites.

While the inspection was taking place the woman next door is also wanting a termite inspection. A lot of our days lately are on termites and advising courses of action to take.

1) there is only 1 Queen termite who’s main purpose is to lay up to approx 30,000 eggs per day! The other 8 we found today are to ensure the colony lives on should something happen to the Queen.

2) a Queen & King will only fly once and that is to find a place to start a new colony and then will shed their wings and never fly again.

3) a Queen termite can live up to 50 years of age in her lifetime lay 165 million eggs. The worker termites only live around a year but are easily replaced by the Queen.

4) worker termites are there to feed the Queen and find food sources for themselves.

5) The only way to successfully kill a termite colony is by killing the queen. She never leaves her chambers you have to find a way of getting to her.

Killing all the workers is not enough as she can quickly replace them.
