Black Ants and Ant Nests in Canberra

black ants

Black Ants and ant nests are one of the most common pest control problems in Canberra these tiny species of ant are call the black house ant (Ridomyrmex glaber) and white footed house ant (Technomyrmex albipes) these ants drive people crazy as one minute there are just a few and like magic next time you look there are many.

The reason why ants and ant nests are difficult to control is that they nest under paths, in wall cavities, in potted plants or garden beds they can even be under the house, roof or come in from a neighbour’s house!

How do I know if I have an ant infestation?

There are a number of signs that you have an ant pest control problem simply the numbers of ants when you open the pantry or if you see them across your bench and no matter how many times you wipe the ants away more come to replace the ones you got rid of!

If you’re worried you have an ant infestation, here are four signs that could confirm your suspicion:

  1. Ants covered exposed food
  2. Your pet’s food bowl has been infiltrated
  3. You notice scout ants walking around
  4. You follow the line of ants from where they are foraging and discover the ant nest

What to do about killing little black ants and ant nests?

There are a few homemade remedies that tend to have limited success but are worth having a try at to get rid of them, but to permanently eradicate them the only way to do this is to call in a reputable pest control company like A1 Pest Control Canberra who will use treatments that they are licensed to use.

In the meantime let’s go back to ingredients you can use to either spray or bait the black ants.

  • Fill a spray bottle with 50/50 water and vinegar spray the trail line
this works well with ammonia mixed the same way.
  • Mix equal parts baking soda and powdered sugar together. Pour the mixture into a shallow container or bowl, then place it near the line of ants. The powdered sugar will attract the ants to the mixture. The ants will take it back to their nest and eat it.
  • Borax (can be found in the laundry section in bigger grocery chains like Coles or Woolworths) bait can be made a few ways one way is to mix 1 part borax with 2 parts peanut butter. This mixture is good as it can be smeared on a wall where the ants are and taken back to the nest.
  • Equal parts of borax and sugar pour over hot water stir until dissolved and then soak cotton balls in the mixture and put the balls in the forage line and near the nest. The sugar attracts the ants who eat the sugar and take it back to the nest – hopefully that is the end of the pest problem.

Helpful tips to keep black ants out of your home.

  • Some of these tips will be obvious and some not. One of the first things you do is get inside the pantry and give sauce, jams and syrup bottles a good wipe down.
  • Keep biscuits and cakes in a container that you can seal.
  • Don’t leave pet food out overnight.
  • Wipe down bench tops sweep up crumbs
  • Regular vacuuming.
  • Check dripping or leaking taps

Part of your home maintenance should always get pest control done at least once a year, more visits are needed for commercial properties where there is food preparation such as restaurants.

PEST CONTROL TIPS FOR LANDLORDS

http://a1pestcontrolcanberra.com.au/

Being a landlord is rewarding as property values increase around Canberra and I know that many landlords depend on feedback from property managers to make them aware of any pending maintenance issues..

PEST CONTROL definitely comes under the maintenance banner as having regular general inspections will protect your property against infestations by general pests or from causing property damage from termites.

TAX ADVANTAGES TO THE LANDLORD

Getting near the end of the financial year is a great time to book in any general pest control, termite inspection or termite barriers if termites are found. Its a claimable expense for investment properties.

WHAT PEST CONTROL IS POSSIBLE THIS TIME OF YEAR?

– termite inspection either visual or thermal imaging
– chemical termite barriers if termites are found
– general pest all the creepy crawlies, cockroach, spiders etc
– mice/rat baiting this time of year they head indoors
– possum removals are one of our biggest call outs this time of
year.

PEST CONTROL CANBERRA – SPRING IS HERE…SO ARE THE PESTS!

Nothing like the start of spring that makes everything grow and the insects and pests start tobe noticed again.

TERMITES

Termites are the silent pests and you really are not aware that they are around until you see evidence or damage first hand. If you are out in the garden take a look at trees, fence lines or the tree you cut down and left the stump as that is what they love – soft wood. People are under the impression that insurance covers the damage these pests cause and 99% insurance policies DO NOT cover termite damage.

We offer a $2M 8 year assurance policy when we do our termite barriers so definitely worth getting us to inspect and or treat your property as we use only quality treatments

EUROPEAN WASPS

We get a lot of call outs for these pest and if there is one thing I will say is DON’T disturb them at all we have protective clothing and they still manage to sting us. What happens is that when disturbed the whole nest attacks and unlike bees who sting once they sting multiple times.

If your in the garden be careful as European wasps nest can sometimes be underground. We had a nest that was the size of a basketball that we removed last season.

BEES

We know that bees are in the news at the moment and we always refer our calls to beekeepers to remove unwanted nests but there are times when bees can not be accessed and they become a risk to humans when they are inside walls and hard to get to places and we need to kill them so that they don’t sting humans and pets.

GENERAL PEST INSPECTION

Like spring cleaning now is a great time to treat your property with a general pest treatment. We get asked about spiders and we can treat those for you and will spray their webs, many people though get a broom after we go to take down the web not thinking the treatment will be active for many weeks to come to new spiders that visit the web. So leave the web up for 3-5 weeks for longer term treatment.

AT HOME TIPS ON PEST CONTROL

At A1 Pest Control Canberra, we help keep your family, home and business safe from pests. Our professionally trained staff are always on hand to help answer your pest problems no matter the pest problem is we have the solution! However, you too can play a part in helping to protect your property from unwanted pests. Here are some simple tips and tricks for easy pest prevention.

  1. Try pest prevention first.

Keep your place spick and span! You might think that is an obvious tip for keeping your home pest free, but it’s with the simplest jobs that we can be most careless! Here are some ways to keep your place pest free.

  • Remove sources of food, water and shelter.
  • Store food in sealed plastic or glass containers. Garbage containing food scraps should be placed in tightly covered trash cans. Remove garbage regularly from your home.
  • Fix leaky plumbing and don’t let water accumulate anywhere in the home. Don’t let water collect in trays under your houseplants or refrigerator. Don’t leave pet food and water out overnight.
  • Clutter provides places for pests to breed and hide and makes it hard to get rid of them. Get rid of things like stacks of newspapers, magazines, or cardboard.
  • Close off places where pests can enter and hide. For example, caulk cracks and crevices around cabinets or baseboards. Use steel wool to fill spaces around pipes.
  • Cover any holes with wire mesh.
  • Learn about the pests you have and options to control them.
  • Check for pests in packages or boxes before carrying them inside.

Maintain your home. Keeping your home in good condition is important for a safe and healthy environment for your family. It also makes your house more welcoming for you and your family and less inviting for pests!

  • Seal up the house – all cracks, windows, floors and doors
  • Regularly check roofing and walls for any signs of decay – anything that could become a potential home for pests – Mow lawns and trim plants regularly
  • Avoid any buildup of clutter both inside and outside the home – keep a good distance between any wood piles, compost bins, etc. and your home

Don’t use outdoor chemicals indoors. Many chemicals intended for use outdoors are dangerous to use indoors because they will remain toxic longer inside than they would outdoors.

Don’t assume that twice as much is better. Always read and follow label directions.

Don’t transfer pesticides to other containers. Store pesticides in their original containers. Only mix as much as you are going to use at one time if the pesticide must be mixed with water. And most importantly, don’t use empty pesticide containers to store anything else.

This may result to confusion and eventually can lead to poisoning. Learning about the pests you have and options that are available to control specific pests is also helpful to pest control within your home or business.

There are many preventative measures you can take but sometimes this is not enough call
