Termite Prevention Tips: Protect Your Home From Termites

Are you looking for termite prevention tips? Here are the tips to protect your area from termites invading your property.

Cold winter is long over and many people are now enjoying the wonder of the spring season across our country. We’re experiencing longer daylight and we got more flowers now in our garden. However, because of the warmer weather, unwanted guests are showing up on our property.

People may start seeing signs of swarmers and flying termites in their area.

Termite Prevention Tips

Spring is the perfect season for termites.

This is the time when swarmers would look for mates and create new colonies. And often, they would choose unprotected residential properties as their new home. Being silent workers, termites can easily eat a home out from under without any visible signs. Property owners, for most of the time, would only notice them when huge damage has been done.

Termites can invisibly work all day, chewing through wood, house flooring and even wallpaper. If they are left untreated for several years, they have the ability to weaken the structural stability of a home depending on the species. In fact, termites are destructive. Each year, termites cause up to $5 billion worth of property damage.

The good thing is that there are steps that owners can take to prevent termites from invading their property. National Pest Management Association (NPMA) gave 10 termite prevention tips to protect your area from termites:

10 Termite Prevention Tips
  1. Redirect water away from your house through gutters, splash blocks and functioning downspouts.
  2. Repair all leaking water pipes, faucets and exterior air-conditioning units.
  3. Remove or lessen moisture in and around your home – termites need this to thrive
  4. Fix fascia, soffits and corroded roof shingles.
  5. Regularly monitor the foundation of your home for signs of uneven or bubbling paint, wood that has hollow sounds when tapped and mud tubes – termites use this to find sources of food.
  6. Change weather stripping and loose mortar around your basement foundation and windows.
  7. Retain an 18-inch gap between soil and any wood part of your home.
  8. Check all exterior areas that are made of wood for any visible changes – this includes windows, door frames and skirting boards.
  9. Keep firewood at least 20 feet away from your house.
  10. Have an annual professional inspection. Homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover wood-boring insect damage.

Remember that you cannot eliminate termites by using do-it-yourself measures. Do not wait for any visible signs before you take action. Immediately contact pest control experts if you suspect a termite infestation in your property. They can identify the degree of the problem and give you recommendations of what treatment is the best option.
